Surah Al-Qalam - English Translation by Literal

نٓۚ وَٱلۡقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسۡطُرُونَ

N and the writing utensil/pen and what they write/inscribe/draft
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 1

مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجۡنُونٖ

you are not with your Lord`s blessing/goodness with mad/insane
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 2

وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجۡرًا غَيۡرَ مَمۡنُونٖ

And that truly for you (is) a reward (E) not interrupted/weakened (continuous)
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 3

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٖ

And that you are on (E) great nature/character
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 4

فَسَتُبۡصِرُ وَيُبۡصِرُونَ

So you will see/look/understand, and they (will) see/look/understand
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 5

بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلۡمَفۡتُونُ

With which of you (is) the insane
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 6

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِينَ

That truly your Lord He is more knowing with who misguided from His way/path , and He is more knowing with the guided
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 7

فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ

So do not obey the liars/deniers/falsifiers
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 8

وَدُّواْ لَوۡ تُدۡهِنُ فَيُدۡهِنُونَ

They wished/desired if you grease/flatter with hypocrisy , so they grease/flatter with hypocrisy
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 9

وَلَا تُطِعۡ كُلَّ حَلَّافٖ مَّهِينٍ

And do not obey every/each habitual swearer despised/humiliated
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 10

هَمَّازٖ مَّشَّآءِۭ بِنَمِيمٖ

Backbiter/urger , walking gossiper with slander/malice
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 11

مَّنَّاعٖ لِّلۡخَيۡرِ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ

Miser/often preventing to the good/generosity , transgressor/violator , sinner/criminal
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 12

عُتُلِّۭ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ

Rough/rude , after that a known mean low or evil person
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 13

أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٖ وَبَنِينَ

That (E) he was (owner) of property/wealth and sons and daughters
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 14

إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

If Our verses/evidences are read/recited on him, he said: "The first`s/beginner`s myths
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 15

سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلۡخُرۡطُومِ

We will brand him by fire/mark him on the nose/trunk/snout (usually used for elephants)
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 16

إِنَّا بَلَوۡنَٰهُمۡ كَمَا بَلَوۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ إِذۡ أَقۡسَمُواْ لَيَصۡرِمُنَّهَا مُصۡبِحِينَ

We (E) tested them as/like We tested the treed garden`s owners/friends/company when they swore/made oath (that) they will cut it off (E) (will harvest it) by the morning/day break
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 17

وَلَا يَسۡتَثۡنُونَ

And nor they exempt/make exception
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 18

فَطَافَ عَلَيۡهَا طَآئِفٞ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمۡ نَآئِمُونَ

So a circler/walker (twister/tornado) circled/walked on them, and (while) they are sleeping/quiet/ still
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 19

فَأَصۡبَحَتۡ كَٱلصَّرِيمِ

So it became/became in the morning as/like the harvested land/isolated sandy area
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 20

فَتَنَادَوۡاْ مُصۡبِحِينَ

So they called each other in the morning/daybreak
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 21

أَنِ ٱغۡدُواْ عَلَىٰ حَرۡثِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰرِمِينَ

That (E) go early on (to) your cultivation/plantation if you were cutting/shearing off (harvesting)
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 22

فَٱنطَلَقُواْ وَهُمۡ يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ

So they left/set out , and they are conversing quietly
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 23

أَن لَّا يَدۡخُلَنَّهَا ٱلۡيَوۡمَ عَلَيۡكُم مِّسۡكِينٞ

That (E) no poor oppressed enters it (E) on you today/the day
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 24

وَغَدَوۡاْ عَلَىٰ حَرۡدٖ قَٰدِرِينَ

And they went early on anger/prevention , capable/able
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 25

فَلَمَّا رَأَوۡهَا قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَ

So when they saw it, they said: "That we are misguided (E)
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 26

بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ

But we are deprived
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 27

قَالَ أَوۡسَطُهُمۡ أَلَمۡ أَقُل لَّكُمۡ لَوۡلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ

Their most honoured/moderate said: "Did I not say to you if only you praise/glorify
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 28

قَالُواْ سُبۡحَٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ

They said: "Our Lord`s praise/glory, we were unjust/oppressive
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 29

فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ يَتَلَٰوَمُونَ

So some/part of them approached/came on (to) some (each other) blaming/reprimanding each other
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 30

قَالُواْ يَٰوَيۡلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَٰغِينَ

They said: "Oh, our calamity , we (E), we were tyrannizing/arrogant
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 31

عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبۡدِلَنَا خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَ

Maybe/perhaps that (E) our Lord exchanges/substitutes (for) us better than it, that we are to our Lord desiring/wishing
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 32

كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡعَذَابُۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ أَكۡبَرُۚ لَوۡ كَانُواْ يَعۡلَمُونَ

As/like that (is) the torture, and the end`s (other life`s) torture (E) (is) greater if they were knowing
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 33

إِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

That truly to the fearing and obeying at their Lord (are) the blessed treed gardens/paradises
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 34

أَفَنَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ كَٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

Do We make the Moslems/submitters as the criminals/sinners
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 35

مَا لَكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ

What/why (is it) for you, how you judge/rule
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 36

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ كِتَٰبٞ فِيهِ تَدۡرُسُونَ

Or for you (is) a Book in it you study/read
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 37

إِنَّ لَكُمۡ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ

That for you in it (is) what (E) you prefer choose
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 38

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ أَيۡمَٰنٌ عَلَيۡنَا بَٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمۡ لَمَا تَحۡكُمُونَ

Or for you (are) rights/oaths on Us reaching to the Resurrection Day, that for you then (is) what (E) you judge/rule
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 39

سَلۡهُمۡ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ

Ask/question them which of them (is) with that a leader/grantor
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 40

أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَكَآءُ فَلۡيَأۡتُواْ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمۡ إِن كَانُواْ صَٰدِقِينَ

Or for them (are) partners (with God)? So they should come with their partners (with God) if they were truthful
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 41

يَوۡمَ يُكۡشَفُ عَن سَاقٖ وَيُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ

A day/time being uncovered/(relieved) of (a) shin/leg, and they be/are being called repeatedly to the prostration, so they are not able
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 42

خَٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٞۖ وَقَدۡ كَانُواْ يُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمۡ سَٰلِمُونَ

Their eyesights/understanding (are) humble/submissive , humiliation/disgrace burdens/depresses them , and they had become being called repeatedly to the prostration and they are safe/secure
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 43

فَذَرۡنِي وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِيثِۖ سَنَسۡتَدۡرِجُهُم مِّنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ

So leave Me and who lies/denies/falsifies with this the information/speech, We will lead them gradually from where/when they do not know
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 44

وَأُمۡلِي لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ كَيۡدِي مَتِينٌ

And I extend for them in time/life , that truly My plotting/conspiring (is) solid/strong
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 45

أَمۡ تَسۡـَٔلُهُمۡ أَجۡرٗا فَهُم مِّن مَّغۡرَمٖ مُّثۡقَلُونَ

Or (do) you ask/question them (for) a wage/fee so they are heavy/loaded/burdened from (a) burdensome debt
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 46

أَمۡ عِندَهُمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبُ فَهُمۡ يَكۡتُبُونَ

Or at them (is) the unseen/absent/(future) , so they are writing/dictating/ordering
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 47

فَٱصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلۡحُوتِ إِذۡ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكۡظُومٞ

So be patient for your Lord`s judgment/rule, and do not be as the large fish`s/whale`s owner/friend/company when he called/cried and he is held/quietened/suppressed
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 48

لَّوۡلَآ أَن تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ نِعۡمَةٞ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذۡمُومٞ

Had it not been for a blessing/goodness from his Lord, (that) caught up (to)/reached him , he would have been discarded/cast off at the open/space, and he is blamed/defamed
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 49

فَٱجۡتَبَٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَجَعَلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

So his Lord chose/purified him, so He made him from the correct/righteous
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 50

وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَيُزۡلِقُونَكَ بِأَبۡصَٰرِهِمۡ لَمَّا سَمِعُواْ ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُۥ لَمَجۡنُونٞ

And if those who disbelieved were about/almost to make you stumble/slip (E) with their eyesights when they heard/listened (to) the remembrance/reminder (the Koran), and they say: "That he truly is mad/insane (E)
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 51
