Surah An-Najm - English Translation by Safi Kaskas
وَٱلنَّجۡمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
By the falling star
Surah An-Najm, Verse 1
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمۡ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
your friend has not strayed, nor has he erred
Surah An-Najm, Verse 2
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ
Nor does he speak from his own whims
Surah An-Najm, Verse 3
إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡيٞ يُوحَىٰ
It is a revealed revelation
Surah An-Najm, Verse 4
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلۡقُوَىٰ
taught to him by one with mighty powers
Surah An-Najm, Verse 5
ذُو مِرَّةٖ فَٱسۡتَوَىٰ
and splendor who stood still
Surah An-Najm, Verse 6
وَهُوَ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ
while he was at the highest horizon
Surah An-Najm, Verse 7
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
Then he drew near coming down
Surah An-Najm, Verse 8
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوۡسَيۡنِ أَوۡ أَدۡنَىٰ
to within two bows' length or closer
Surah An-Najm, Verse 9
فَأَوۡحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦ مَآ أَوۡحَىٰ
Then God [through that angel] revealed to His servant what He revealed
Surah An-Najm, Verse 10
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلۡفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ
The heart did not doubt what it saw
Surah An-Najm, Verse 11
أَفَتُمَٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ
Do you dispute with him what he saw
Surah An-Najm, Verse 12
وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ نَزۡلَةً أُخۡرَىٰ
Indeed, he saw him in another descent
Surah An-Najm, Verse 13
عِندَ سِدۡرَةِ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ
at the Sidra beyond which none may pass
Surah An-Najm, Verse 14
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰٓ
near the Garden of Refuge
Surah An-Najm, Verse 15
إِذۡ يَغۡشَى ٱلسِّدۡرَةَ مَا يَغۡشَىٰ
where that Sidra was shrouded [in mystery] with what shrouded it
Surah An-Najm, Verse 16
مَا زَاغَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
The eye did not waver, nor did it exceed its limit
Surah An-Najm, Verse 17
لَقَدۡ رَأَىٰ مِنۡ ءَايَٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰٓ
He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord
Surah An-Najm, Verse 18
أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلۡعُزَّىٰ
So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza
Surah An-Najm, Verse 19
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰٓ
and Manat, the third, the other one
Surah An-Najm, Verse 20
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ
Why do you chose for yourself male offspring and assign to God the female
Surah An-Najm, Verse 21
تِلۡكَ إِذٗا قِسۡمَةٞ ضِيزَىٰٓ
That, then, is an unfair distribution
Surah An-Najm, Verse 22
إِنۡ هِيَ إِلَّآ أَسۡمَآءٞ سَمَّيۡتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلۡطَٰنٍۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهۡوَى ٱلۡأَنفُسُۖ وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ
These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but names, which you [who worship them] and your forefathers have invented. God sent no authority for them. They [who worship them] follow nothing but guesswork and their egotistical whims, although guidance has come to them [your people] from their Lord
Surah An-Najm, Verse 23
أَمۡ لِلۡإِنسَٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ
Should man have whatever he wishes for
Surah An-Najm, Verse 24
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰ
when this life and the life to come belong only to God
Surah An-Najm, Verse 25
۞وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٖ فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغۡنِي شَفَٰعَتُهُمۡ شَيۡـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ أَن يَأۡذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرۡضَىٰٓ
There are many angels in the heavens whose intercession is of no benefit at all until God gives permission to whomever He wills, and approves
Surah An-Najm, Verse 26
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسۡمِيَةَ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ
Those who do not believe in the Hereafter give the angels female names
Surah An-Najm, Verse 27
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغۡنِي مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ شَيۡـٔٗا
they have no knowledge of this. They only follow guesswork. Guesswork is no substitute at all for the Truth
Surah An-Najm, Verse 28
فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكۡرِنَا وَلَمۡ يُرِدۡ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا
So pay no attention to whoever turns away from Our message and desires only this worldly life
Surah An-Najm, Verse 29
ذَٰلِكَ مَبۡلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ
That is the extent of their knowledge. Your Lord knows best who strayed from His path, and He knows best who is guided
Surah An-Najm, Verse 30
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لِيَجۡزِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔواْ بِمَا عَمِلُواْ وَيَجۡزِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحۡسَنُواْ بِٱلۡحُسۡنَى
To God belongs everything in the heavens and on earth. He will repay those who do evil according to their deeds, and reward those who do good with the best
Surah An-Najm, Verse 31
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِۚ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِكُمۡ إِذۡ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِذۡ أَنتُمۡ أَجِنَّةٞ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَٰتِكُمۡۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمۡۖ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ
those who avoid major sins and indecencies, except for minor lapses excepted; your Lord's forgiveness is vast. He knows you well, ever since He created you from the earth and ever since you were embryos in your mothers' wombs. So do not attest to your own virtues; He knows best those who are mindful of Him
Surah An-Najm, Verse 32
أَفَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي تَوَلَّىٰ
Have you seen the one who turned away
Surah An-Najm, Verse 33
وَأَعۡطَىٰ قَلِيلٗا وَأَكۡدَىٰٓ
and gave a little and then held back
Surah An-Najm, Verse 34
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ
Does he have knowledge of all that is beyond, enabling him to see the future
Surah An-Najm, Verse 35
أَمۡ لَمۡ يُنَبَّأۡ بِمَا فِي صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ
Or has he not been told what was in the scrolls of Moses
Surah An-Najm, Verse 36
وَإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِي وَفَّىٰٓ
and [of] Abraham, who fulfilled his duty
Surah An-Najm, Verse 37
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٞ وِزۡرَ أُخۡرَىٰ
that no bearer of burdens will bear the burdens of another
Surah An-Najm, Verse 38
وَأَن لَّيۡسَ لِلۡإِنسَٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
that a human being attains only what he strives for
Surah An-Najm, Verse 39
وَأَنَّ سَعۡيَهُۥ سَوۡفَ يُرَىٰ
and that his striving will be seen
Surah An-Najm, Verse 40
ثُمَّ يُجۡزَىٰهُ ٱلۡجَزَآءَ ٱلۡأَوۡفَىٰ
Then he will receive for it the fullest reward
Surah An-Najm, Verse 41
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ
The ultimate end is to your Lord
Surah An-Najm, Verse 42
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضۡحَكَ وَأَبۡكَىٰ
that It is He who causes [one] to laugh and weep
Surah An-Najm, Verse 43
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحۡيَا
That it is He who causes death and gives life
Surah An-Najm, Verse 44
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوۡجَيۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰ
that He creates the two mates - the male and female
Surah An-Najm, Verse 45
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ إِذَا تُمۡنَىٰ
from a fertilized ovum following ejaculation
Surah An-Najm, Verse 46
وَأَنَّ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰ
that the next creation is incumbent upon Him
Surah An-Najm, Verse 47
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغۡنَىٰ وَأَقۡنَىٰ
That it is He who enriches and impoverishes
Surah An-Najm, Verse 48
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعۡرَىٰ
that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius
Surah An-Najm, Verse 49
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهۡلَكَ عَادًا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ
that it is He who destroyed the first people of Aad
Surah An-Najm, Verse 50
وَثَمُودَاْ فَمَآ أَبۡقَىٰ
and Thamud. He spared no one
Surah An-Najm, Verse 51
وَقَوۡمَ نُوحٖ مِّن قَبۡلُۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ هُمۡ أَظۡلَمَ وَأَطۡغَىٰ
And before that the people of Noah who were most unjust and most oppressive
Surah An-Najm, Verse 52
وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَةَ أَهۡوَىٰ
That it is He who brought down the ruined cities
Surah An-Najm, Verse 53
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
And covered them by that whatever He covered them
Surah An-Najm, Verse 54
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ
Which then of your Lord's blessings do you doubt
Surah An-Najm, Verse 55
هَٰذَا نَذِيرٞ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰٓ
This is a warning just like the earlier warnings
Surah An-Najm, Verse 56
أَزِفَتِ ٱلۡأٓزِفَةُ
The inevitable Day draws near
Surah An-Najm, Verse 57
لَيۡسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
No one, besides God, can disclose it
Surah An-Najm, Verse 58
أَفَمِنۡ هَٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِيثِ تَعۡجَبُونَ
Do you marvel at this discourse
Surah An-Najm, Verse 59
وَتَضۡحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبۡكُونَ
And you laugh and do not weep
Surah An-Najm, Verse 60
وَأَنتُمۡ سَٰمِدُونَ
While you are lost in your playfulness
Surah An-Najm, Verse 61
فَٱسۡجُدُواْۤ لِلَّهِۤ وَٱعۡبُدُواْ۩
So bow down before God and worship [Him]
Surah An-Najm, Verse 62
