Surah An-Najm - English Translation by Tbirving
وَٱلنَّجۡمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
By The Star as it sets
Surah An-Najm, Verse 1
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمۡ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided
Surah An-Najm, Verse 2
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ
He does not speak from some whim
Surah An-Najm, Verse 3
إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡيٞ يُوحَىٰ
it is merely inspiration that is revealed [to him]
Surah An-Najm, Verse 4
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلۡقُوَىٰ
Someone firm in strength has taught him
Surah An-Najm, Verse 5
ذُو مِرَّةٖ فَٱسۡتَوَىٰ
someone possessing such ability that he soared up
Surah An-Najm, Verse 6
وَهُوَ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ
and stood, poised at the highest [point on the] horizon
Surah An-Najm, Verse 7
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
Then he approached and came right down
Surah An-Najm, Verse 8
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوۡسَيۡنِ أَوۡ أَدۡنَىٰ
and stood two bow-lengths off or even closer
Surah An-Najm, Verse 9
فَأَوۡحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦ مَآ أَوۡحَىٰ
He inspired whatever he inspired in His servant
Surah An-Najm, Verse 10
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلۡفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ
His vitals did not deny whatever he saw
Surah An-Najm, Verse 11
أَفَتُمَٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ
Yet will you (all) distrust him about what he [actually] saw
Surah An-Najm, Verse 12
وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ نَزۡلَةً أُخۡرَىٰ
He saw him in another descent
Surah An-Najm, Verse 13
عِندَ سِدۡرَةِ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ
near the Hawthorne on the Boundary
Surah An-Najm, Verse 14
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰٓ
alongside the Garden of Repose
Surah An-Najm, Verse 15
إِذۡ يَغۡشَى ٱلسِّدۡرَةَ مَا يَغۡشَىٰ
When whatever covered the Hawthorn covered it
Surah An-Najm, Verse 16
مَا زَاغَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
his eyesight did not falter nor was it carried away
Surah An-Najm, Verse 17
لَقَدۡ رَأَىٰ مِنۡ ءَايَٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰٓ
He saw some of his Lord´s greatest signs
Surah An-Najm, Verse 18
أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلۡعُزَّىٰ
Have you (all) considered al-Lat and al-Uzza
Surah An-Najm, Verse 19
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰٓ
and Manat the other [who ranks] in third place
Surah An-Najm, Verse 20
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ
Do you have sons while He has daughters
Surah An-Najm, Verse 21
تِلۡكَ إِذٗا قِسۡمَةٞ ضِيزَىٰٓ
That would then be an unfair attribution
Surah An-Najm, Verse 22
إِنۡ هِيَ إِلَّآ أَسۡمَآءٞ سَمَّيۡتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلۡطَٰنٍۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهۡوَى ٱلۡأَنفُسُۖ وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ
They are only some names which you and your forefathers have called them; God has not sent down any authority for them. They merely follow conjecture and something their souls fancy. Yet guidance has already reached them from their Lord
Surah An-Najm, Verse 23
أَمۡ لِلۡإِنسَٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ
Or may man have anything he hankers for
Surah An-Najm, Verse 24
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰ
Yet God still holds the Last as well as the First
Surah An-Najm, Verse 25
۞وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٖ فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغۡنِي شَفَٰعَتُهُمۡ شَيۡـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ أَن يَأۡذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرۡضَىٰٓ
How many angels are there in Heaven whose intercession does not help in any way except after God permits it, for whomever He wishes and approves of
Surah An-Najm, Verse 26
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسۡمِيَةَ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ
The ones who do not believe in the Hereafter call the angels by the names of females
Surah An-Najm, Verse 27
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغۡنِي مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ شَيۡـٔٗا
Yet they have no knowledge about it; they only follow guesswork. Conjecture will not help out in any way against the Truth
Surah An-Najm, Verse 28
فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكۡرِنَا وَلَمۡ يُرِدۡ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا
so shun anyone who avoids mentioning Us and only wants [to enjoy] worldly life
Surah An-Najm, Verse 29
ذَٰلِكَ مَبۡلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ
that will be their range of knowledge. Your Lord is quite Aware as to who has strayed from His path, just as He is quite Aware as to who is guided
Surah An-Najm, Verse 30
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لِيَجۡزِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔواْ بِمَا عَمِلُواْ وَيَجۡزِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحۡسَنُواْ بِٱلۡحُسۡنَى
God possesses whatever is in Heaven and whatever is on Earth, so He may reward the ones who commit evil according to whatever they have done while He rewards the ones who act kindly with [equal] kindness
Surah An-Najm, Verse 31
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِۚ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِكُمۡ إِذۡ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِذۡ أَنتُمۡ أَجِنَّةٞ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَٰتِكُمۡۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمۡۖ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ
Those who refrain from the greatest vices and sexual offences, except for oversights (will find] your Lord is Boundless when it comes to forgiveness. He was quite Aware of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were still embryos in your mothers´ wombs. Do not try to justify yourselves; He is quite Aware as to who has done his duty
Surah An-Najm, Verse 32
أَفَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي تَوَلَّىٰ
Have you seen someone who turns away
Surah An-Najm, Verse 33
وَأَعۡطَىٰ قَلِيلٗا وَأَكۡدَىٰٓ
He has given little, and even skimps at that
Surah An-Najm, Verse 34
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ
Has he such knowledge about the Unseen that he can (actually) see [it]
Surah An-Najm, Verse 35
أَمۡ لَمۡ يُنَبَّأۡ بِمَا فِي صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ
Or has he not been notified about what was on Moses´ scrolls
Surah An-Najm, Verse 36
وَإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِي وَفَّىٰٓ
and on Abraham´s, who always kept his word
Surah An-Najm, Verse 37
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٞ وِزۡرَ أُخۡرَىٰ
That no burdened soul shall bear another´s burden
Surah An-Najm, Verse 38
وَأَن لَّيۡسَ لِلۡإِنسَٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
That everyman receives only what he makes an effort for
Surah An-Najm, Verse 39
وَأَنَّ سَعۡيَهُۥ سَوۡفَ يُرَىٰ
so his effort shall be noticed
Surah An-Najm, Verse 40
ثُمَّ يُجۡزَىٰهُ ٱلۡجَزَآءَ ٱلۡأَوۡفَىٰ
then he will be rewarded to the fullest extent
Surah An-Najm, Verse 41
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ
And that towards your Lord lies the final End
Surah An-Najm, Verse 42
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضۡحَكَ وَأَبۡكَىٰ
and He makes (us) both laugh and cry
Surah An-Najm, Verse 43
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحۡيَا
He brings death and grants life
Surah An-Najm, Verse 44
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوۡجَيۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰ
He has created both sexes, male and female
Surah An-Najm, Verse 45
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ إِذَا تُمۡنَىٰ
from a drop of semen which has been ejected
Surah An-Najm, Verse 46
وَأَنَّ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰ
On Him [rests your] next appearance
Surah An-Najm, Verse 47
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغۡنَىٰ وَأَقۡنَىٰ
He grants wealth and riches
Surah An-Najm, Verse 48
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعۡرَىٰ
He is even Lord of the Dogstar
Surah An-Najm, Verse 49
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهۡلَكَ عَادًا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ
Yet He wiped out the first [nation] of Ad
Surah An-Najm, Verse 50
وَثَمُودَاْ فَمَآ أَبۡقَىٰ
and Thamud, and left nothing over
Surah An-Najm, Verse 51
وَقَوۡمَ نُوحٖ مِّن قَبۡلُۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ هُمۡ أَظۡلَمَ وَأَطۡغَىٰ
and even Noah´s folk previously, who had been most unjust and arrogant
Surah An-Najm, Verse 52
وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَةَ أَهۡوَىٰ
And he fell upon the Overthrown [Towns]
Surah An-Najm, Verse 53
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
and covered them up with whatever covered them
Surah An-Najm, Verse 54
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ
So which of your Lord´s benefits will you distrust
Surah An-Najm, Verse 55
هَٰذَا نَذِيرٞ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰٓ
This is a warner just like the early warners
Surah An-Najm, Verse 56
أَزِفَتِ ٱلۡأٓزِفَةُ
What is imminent is approaching
Surah An-Najm, Verse 57
لَيۡسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
there is nothing besides God to remove it
Surah An-Najm, Verse 58
أَفَمِنۡ هَٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِيثِ تَعۡجَبُونَ
Are you amazed at this report
Surah An-Najm, Verse 59
وَتَضۡحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبۡكُونَ
You laugh, and do not weep
Surah An-Najm, Verse 60
وَأَنتُمۡ سَٰمِدُونَ
while you hold your heads so high
Surah An-Najm, Verse 61
فَٱسۡجُدُواْۤ لِلَّهِۤ وَٱعۡبُدُواْ۩
Bow down on your knees to God and worship [Him]
Surah An-Najm, Verse 62
