Surah Al-Muzzammil - English Translation by Aisha Bewley
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُزَّمِّلُ
You who are enwrapped in your clothing
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 1
قُمِ ٱلَّيۡلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلٗا
stay up at night, except a little
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 2
نِّصۡفَهُۥٓ أَوِ ٱنقُصۡ مِنۡهُ قَلِيلًا
half of it, or a little less
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 3
أَوۡ زِدۡ عَلَيۡهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ تَرۡتِيلًا
or a little more, and recite the Qur´an distinctly
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 4
إِنَّا سَنُلۡقِي عَلَيۡكَ قَوۡلٗا ثَقِيلًا
We will impose a weighty Word upon you
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 5
إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ ٱلَّيۡلِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ وَطۡـٔٗا وَأَقۡوَمُ قِيلًا
Certainly rising at night has a stronger effect and is more conducive to concentration
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 6
إِنَّ لَكَ فِي ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبۡحٗا طَوِيلٗا
In the daytime much of your time is taken up by business matters
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 7
وَٱذۡكُرِ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلۡ إِلَيۡهِ تَبۡتِيلٗا
Remember the Name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him completely
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 8
رَّبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذۡهُ وَكِيلٗا
Lord of the East and West — there is no god but Him — so take Him as your Guardian
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 9
وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱهۡجُرۡهُمۡ هَجۡرٗا جَمِيلٗا
Be steadfast in the face of what they say and cut yourself off from them — but courteously
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 10
وَذَرۡنِي وَٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ أُوْلِي ٱلنَّعۡمَةِ وَمَهِّلۡهُمۡ قَلِيلًا
Leave the deniers, who live a life of ease, to Me, alone, and tolerate them a little longer
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 11
إِنَّ لَدَيۡنَآ أَنكَالٗا وَجَحِيمٗا
With Us there are shackles and a Blazing Fire
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 12
وَطَعَامٗا ذَا غُصَّةٖ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمٗا
and food that chokes and a painful punishment
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 13
يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَثِيبٗا مَّهِيلًا
on the Day the earth and mountains shake and the mountains become like shifting dunes
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 14
إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَآ إِلَيۡكُمۡ رَسُولٗا شَٰهِدًا عَلَيۡكُمۡ كَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ رَسُولٗا
We have sent you a Messenger to bear witness against you just as We sent Pharaoh a Messenger
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 15
فَعَصَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُ أَخۡذٗا وَبِيلٗا
But Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger, so We seized him with terrible severity
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 16
فَكَيۡفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرۡتُمۡ يَوۡمٗا يَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡوِلۡدَٰنَ شِيبًا
How will you safeguard yourselves, if you are kafir, against a Day which will turn children grey
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 17
ٱلسَّمَآءُ مُنفَطِرُۢ بِهِۦۚ كَانَ وَعۡدُهُۥ مَفۡعُولًا
by which heaven will be split apart? His promise will be fulfilled
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 18
إِنَّ هَٰذِهِۦ تَذۡكِرَةٞۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا
This truly is a reminder, so let anyone who wills take the Way towards his Lord
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 19
۞إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدۡنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَيِ ٱلَّيۡلِ وَنِصۡفَهُۥ وَثُلُثَهُۥ وَطَآئِفَةٞ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مَعَكَۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ ٱلَّيۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحۡصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ فَٱقۡرَءُواْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِۚ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرۡضَىٰ وَءَاخَرُونَ يَضۡرِبُونَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ يَبۡتَغُونَ مِن فَضۡلِ ٱللَّهِ وَءَاخَرُونَ يُقَٰتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِۖ فَٱقۡرَءُواْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنۡهُۚ وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَقۡرِضُواْ ٱللَّهَ قَرۡضًا حَسَنٗاۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُواْ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنۡ خَيۡرٖ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَيۡرٗا وَأَعۡظَمَ أَجۡرٗاۚ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ ٱللَّهَۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمُۢ
Your Lord knows that you stay up nearly two-thirds of the night — or half of it, or a third of it — and a group of those with you. Allah determines the night and day. He knows you will not keep count of it, so He has turned towards you. Recite as much of the Qur´an as is easy for you. He knows that some of you are ill and that others are travelling in the land seeking Allah´s bounty, and that others are fighting in the Way of Allah. So recite as much of it as is easy for you. And establish salat and pay zakat and lend a generous loan to Allah. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves you will find it with Allah as something better and as a greater reward. And seek forgiveness from Allah. Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 20
