Surah Al-Muzzammil - English Translation by Muhammad Sarwar
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُزَّمِّلُ
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 1
قُمِ ٱلَّيۡلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلٗا
worship (God) for a few hours at night
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 2
نِّصۡفَهُۥٓ أَوِ ٱنقُصۡ مِنۡهُ قَلِيلًا
(Worship Him) for more or less than half of the night
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 3
أَوۡ زِدۡ عَلَيۡهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ تَرۡتِيلًا
and recite the Quran in a distinct tone
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 4
إِنَّا سَنُلۡقِي عَلَيۡكَ قَوۡلٗا ثَقِيلًا
We are about to reveal to you a mighty word
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 5
إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ ٱلَّيۡلِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ وَطۡـٔٗا وَأَقۡوَمُ قِيلًا
Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 6
إِنَّ لَكَ فِي ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبۡحٗا طَوِيلٗا
During the day, you are preoccupied with many activities
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 7
وَٱذۡكُرِ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلۡ إِلَيۡهِ تَبۡتِيلٗا
Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Lord of the eastern and western regions, with due sincerity
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 8
رَّبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذۡهُ وَكِيلٗا
He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 9
وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱهۡجُرۡهُمۡ هَجۡرٗا جَمِيلٗا
Bear patiently whatever they say, do not yield to them and keep on preaching decently to them
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 10
وَذَرۡنِي وَٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ أُوْلِي ٱلنَّعۡمَةِ وَمَهِّلۡهُمۡ قَلِيلًا
Leave the prosperous disbelievers to Me and give them respite for a little while
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 11
إِنَّ لَدَيۡنَآ أَنكَالٗا وَجَحِيمٗا
We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 12
وَطَعَامٗا ذَا غُصَّةٖ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمٗا
food which chokes (them), and a painful torment
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 13
يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَثِيبٗا مَّهِيلًا
On that day, the earth and the mountains will be violently shaken, and the mountains will be turned into heaps of moving sand
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 14
إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَآ إِلَيۡكُمۡ رَسُولٗا شَٰهِدًا عَلَيۡكُمۡ كَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ رَسُولٗا
We have sent you a Messenger, who will witness your deeds, just as We sent a Messenger to the Pharaoh
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 15
فَعَصَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُ أَخۡذٗا وَبِيلٗا
However, the Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and We seized him with a severe retribution
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 16
فَكَيۡفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرۡتُمۡ يَوۡمٗا يَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡوِلۡدَٰنَ شِيبًا
If you, disbelieve, how will you be able to protect yourselves from the hardships of the day which would even turn children grey-headed
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 17
ٱلسَّمَآءُ مُنفَطِرُۢ بِهِۦۚ كَانَ وَعۡدُهُۥ مَفۡعُولًا
On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 18
إِنَّ هَٰذِهِۦ تَذۡكِرَةٞۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا
This is a reminder. Let anyone who wants, seek guidance from his Lord
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 19
۞إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدۡنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَيِ ٱلَّيۡلِ وَنِصۡفَهُۥ وَثُلُثَهُۥ وَطَآئِفَةٞ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مَعَكَۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ ٱلَّيۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحۡصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ فَٱقۡرَءُواْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِۚ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرۡضَىٰ وَءَاخَرُونَ يَضۡرِبُونَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ يَبۡتَغُونَ مِن فَضۡلِ ٱللَّهِ وَءَاخَرُونَ يُقَٰتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِۖ فَٱقۡرَءُواْ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنۡهُۚ وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَقۡرِضُواْ ٱللَّهَ قَرۡضًا حَسَنٗاۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُواْ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنۡ خَيۡرٖ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَيۡرٗا وَأَعۡظَمَ أَجۡرٗاۚ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ ٱللَّهَۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمُۢ
Your Lord knows that you and a group of those who are with you get up for prayer sometimes for less than two-thirds of the night, sometimes half and sometimes one-third of it. God determines the duration of the night and day. He knew that it would be hard for you to keep an exact account of the timing of the night prayers, so He turned to you with forgiveness. Thus, recite from the Quran as much as possible. He knew that some of you would be sick, others would travel in the land to seek God's favors, and still others would fight for the cause of God. Thus, recite from the Quran as much as possible, be steadfast in prayer, pay the zakat, and give virtuous loans to God. Whatever good deeds you save for the next life, you will certainly find them with God. This is the best investment, and for this you will find the greatest reward. Ask forgiveness from God. God is All-forgiving and All-merciful
Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 20
