Surah Qaf - English Translation by N J Dawood
قٓۚ وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ ٱلۡمَجِيدِ
Qāf. BY the Glorious Koran
Surah Qaf, Verse 1
بَلۡ عَجِبُوٓاْ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرٞ مِّنۡهُمۡ فَقَالَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا شَيۡءٌ عَجِيبٌ
They indeed marvel that one of their own has come to warn them; so that the unbelievers say: ‘This is indeed a wondrous thing
Surah Qaf, Verse 2
أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابٗاۖ ذَٰلِكَ رَجۡعُۢ بَعِيدٞ
When we are dead and turned to dust . . . ?¹ Such a return is most improbable!‘
Surah Qaf, Verse 3
قَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا مَا تَنقُصُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ مِنۡهُمۡۖ وَعِندَنَا كِتَٰبٌ حَفِيظُۢ
We know how the earth consumes them. We hold a book which records all
Surah Qaf, Verse 4
بَلۡ كَذَّبُواْ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمۡ فَهُمۡ فِيٓ أَمۡرٖ مَّرِيجٍ
Indeed, they denied the Truth when it had come to them, and now they are perplexed
Surah Qaf, Verse 5
أَفَلَمۡ يَنظُرُوٓاْ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَوۡقَهُمۡ كَيۡفَ بَنَيۡنَٰهَا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا وَمَا لَهَا مِن فُرُوجٖ
Have they never observed the sky above them, how We built it up and furnished it with ornaments, leaving no crack in its expanse
Surah Qaf, Verse 6
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَدَدۡنَٰهَا وَأَلۡقَيۡنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِيَ وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجِۭ بَهِيجٖ
And We spread out the earth and set upon it immovable mountains. We brought forth from it all kinds of delectable plants
Surah Qaf, Verse 7
تَبۡصِرَةٗ وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِكُلِّ عَبۡدٖ مُّنِيبٖ
A lesson and an Admonition to every penitent mortal
Surah Qaf, Verse 8
وَنَزَّلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءٗ مُّبَٰرَكٗا فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا بِهِۦ جَنَّـٰتٖ وَحَبَّ ٱلۡحَصِيدِ
We send down blessed water from the sky with which We bring forth gardens and the harvest grain
Surah Qaf, Verse 9
وَٱلنَّخۡلَ بَاسِقَٰتٖ لَّهَا طَلۡعٞ نَّضِيدٞ
and tall palm-trees laden with clusters of dates
Surah Qaf, Verse 10
رِّزۡقٗا لِّلۡعِبَادِۖ وَأَحۡيَيۡنَا بِهِۦ بَلۡدَةٗ مَّيۡتٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡخُرُوجُ
a sustenance for humankind; thereby giving new life to a dead land. Such shall be the Resurrection
Surah Qaf, Verse 11
كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٖ وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلرَّسِّ وَثَمُودُ
Long before these the people of Noah and the dwellers of Al-Rass¹ denied the Truth; and so did Thamūd
Surah Qaf, Verse 12
وَعَادٞ وَفِرۡعَوۡنُ وَإِخۡوَٰنُ لُوطٖ
and ‘Ād, Pharaoh and the kin of Lot
Surah Qaf, Verse 13
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡأَيۡكَةِ وَقَوۡمُ تُبَّعٖۚ كُلّٞ كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِ
the dwellers of the Forest² and the people of Tubba‘;³ all disbelieved the apostles and were thus visited by My threatened scourge
Surah Qaf, Verse 14
أَفَعَيِينَا بِٱلۡخَلۡقِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ فِي لَبۡسٖ مِّنۡ خَلۡقٖ جَدِيدٖ
Were We worn out by the First Creation? Yet they are in doubt about a new creation.⁴
Surah Qaf, Verse 15
وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ وَنَعۡلَمُ مَا تُوَسۡوِسُ بِهِۦ نَفۡسُهُۥۖ وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَيۡهِ مِنۡ حَبۡلِ ٱلۡوَرِيدِ
We created man; We know the promptings of his soul, and are closer to him than his jugular vein
Surah Qaf, Verse 16
إِذۡ يَتَلَقَّى ٱلۡمُتَلَقِّيَانِ عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٞ
When the twin keepers receive him, seated on his right, and on his left
Surah Qaf, Verse 17
مَّا يَلۡفِظُ مِن قَوۡلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيۡهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٞ
no word he utters but shall be noted down by a vigilant guard
Surah Qaf, Verse 18
وَجَآءَتۡ سَكۡرَةُ ٱلۡمَوۡتِ بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنتَ مِنۡهُ تَحِيدُ
And when the agony of death comes upon him with the Truth, they will say: ‘This was the fate you endeavoured to avoid.‘
Surah Qaf, Verse 19
وَنُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمُ ٱلۡوَعِيدِ
And the Trumpet shall be blown: that is the promised day
Surah Qaf, Verse 20
وَجَآءَتۡ كُلُّ نَفۡسٖ مَّعَهَا سَآئِقٞ وَشَهِيدٞ
Each soul shall come attended by one who will drive it on, and another to testify against it
Surah Qaf, Verse 21
لَّقَدۡ كُنتَ فِي غَفۡلَةٖ مِّنۡ هَٰذَا فَكَشَفۡنَا عَنكَ غِطَآءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ حَدِيدٞ
Of this you have been heedless; now we have removed your veil, so that today your sight is keen.‘
Surah Qaf, Verse 22
وَقَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ هَٰذَا مَا لَدَيَّ عَتِيدٌ
And his companion will say: ‘My testimony is ready to hand.‘
Surah Qaf, Verse 23
أَلۡقِيَا فِي جَهَنَّمَ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ عَنِيدٖ
Cast, you two, into Hell every hardened unbeliever
Surah Qaf, Verse 24
مَّنَّاعٖ لِّلۡخَيۡرِ مُعۡتَدٖ مُّرِيبٍ
every opponent of good, every doubting transgressor
Surah Qaf, Verse 25
ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَأَلۡقِيَاهُ فِي ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلشَّدِيدِ
who has set up another deity besides God. Hurl him, you two, into the harrowing scourge!‘
Surah Qaf, Verse 26
۞قَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ رَبَّنَا مَآ أَطۡغَيۡتُهُۥ وَلَٰكِن كَانَ فِي ضَلَٰلِۭ بَعِيدٖ
His companion¹ will say: ‘Lord, I did not mislead him. He had already strayed far into error.‘
Surah Qaf, Verse 27
قَالَ لَا تَخۡتَصِمُواْ لَدَيَّ وَقَدۡ قَدَّمۡتُ إِلَيۡكُم بِٱلۡوَعِيدِ
He will say: ‘Do not dispute in My presence. I did forewarn you
Surah Qaf, Verse 28
مَا يُبَدَّلُ ٱلۡقَوۡلُ لَدَيَّ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِظَلَّـٰمٖ لِّلۡعَبِيدِ
My word cannot be changed, nor am I unjust to mortals.‘
Surah Qaf, Verse 29
يَوۡمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ ٱمۡتَلَأۡتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلۡ مِن مَّزِيدٖ
On that day, We shall say to Hell: ‘Are you now full?‘ And Hell will say: ‘Are there any more?‘
Surah Qaf, Verse 30
وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ غَيۡرَ بَعِيدٍ
And, not far thence, Paradise shall be brought close to the righteous
Surah Qaf, Verse 31
هَٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِكُلِّ أَوَّابٍ حَفِيظٖ
Here is what you were promised: for every penitent and honest man
Surah Qaf, Verse 32
مَّنۡ خَشِيَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنَ بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَجَآءَ بِقَلۡبٖ مُّنِيبٍ
who fears the Merciful though unseen, and comes before Him with a contrite heart
Surah Qaf, Verse 33
ٱدۡخُلُوهَا بِسَلَٰمٖۖ ذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمُ ٱلۡخُلُودِ
Enter it in peace. This is the day of immortality.‘
Surah Qaf, Verse 34
لَهُم مَّا يَشَآءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيۡنَا مَزِيدٞ
Therein shall they have all that they desire; and We have yet more
Surah Qaf, Verse 35
وَكَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّن قَرۡنٍ هُمۡ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشٗا فَنَقَّبُواْ فِي ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ هَلۡ مِن مَّحِيصٍ
How many generations, far greater in prowess, have We wiped out before them! They searched the entire land: but could they find a refuge
Surah Qaf, Verse 36
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكۡرَىٰ لِمَن كَانَ لَهُۥ قَلۡبٌ أَوۡ أَلۡقَى ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٞ
Surely in this there is a lesson for everyone who is of a heart possessed, and can hear and see
Surah Qaf, Verse 37
وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا فِي سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٖ وَمَا مَسَّنَا مِن لُّغُوبٖ
In six days We created the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them; nor were We ever wearied
Surah Qaf, Verse 38
فَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ قَبۡلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمۡسِ وَقَبۡلَ ٱلۡغُرُوبِ
Bear then with what they² say. Give glory to your Lord before sunrise and before sunset
Surah Qaf, Verse 39
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيۡلِ فَسَبِّحۡهُ وَأَدۡبَٰرَ ٱلسُّجُودِ
In the night praise Him, and make the additional prostrations
Surah Qaf, Verse 40
وَٱسۡتَمِعۡ يَوۡمَ يُنَادِ ٱلۡمُنَادِ مِن مَّكَانٖ قَرِيبٖ
Listen on the day when the Crier will call from near
Surah Qaf, Verse 41
يَوۡمَ يَسۡمَعُونَ ٱلصَّيۡحَةَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمُ ٱلۡخُرُوجِ
the day when they will hear the cry of Truth. On that day they will rise up from their graves
Surah Qaf, Verse 42
إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نُحۡيِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَإِلَيۡنَا ٱلۡمَصِيرُ
It is We who ordain life and death; and to Us shall all return
Surah Qaf, Verse 43
يَوۡمَ تَشَقَّقُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ عَنۡهُمۡ سِرَاعٗاۚ ذَٰلِكَ حَشۡرٌ عَلَيۡنَا يَسِيرٞ
On that day the earth will be rent asunder over them, and from it they shall emerge in haste. To herd them all is easy enough for Us
Surah Qaf, Verse 44
نَّحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ عَلَيۡهِم بِجَبَّارٖۖ فَذَكِّرۡ بِٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ مَن يَخَافُ وَعِيدِ
We well know what they say. You shall not use coercion with them. Admonish with the Koran whoever fears My threat
Surah Qaf, Verse 45
