Surah Qaf - English Translation by Aisha Bewley
قٓۚ وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ ٱلۡمَجِيدِ
Qaf By the Glorious Qur´an
Surah Qaf, Verse 1
بَلۡ عَجِبُوٓاْ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرٞ مِّنۡهُمۡ فَقَالَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا شَيۡءٌ عَجِيبٌ
Nonetheless they are amazed that a warner should have come to them from among themselves and those who are kafir say, ´What an extraordinary thing
Surah Qaf, Verse 2
أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابٗاۖ ذَٰلِكَ رَجۡعُۢ بَعِيدٞ
When we are dead and turned to dust . . . ? That would be a most unlikely return!´
Surah Qaf, Verse 3
قَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا مَا تَنقُصُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ مِنۡهُمۡۖ وَعِندَنَا كِتَٰبٌ حَفِيظُۢ
We know exactly how the earth eats them away. We possess an all-preserving Book
Surah Qaf, Verse 4
بَلۡ كَذَّبُواْ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمۡ فَهُمۡ فِيٓ أَمۡرٖ مَّرِيجٍ
But they denied the truth when it came to them. They are, therefore, in a very muddled state
Surah Qaf, Verse 5
أَفَلَمۡ يَنظُرُوٓاْ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَوۡقَهُمۡ كَيۡفَ بَنَيۡنَٰهَا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا وَمَا لَهَا مِن فُرُوجٖ
Have they not looked at the sky above them: how We structured it and made it beautiful and how there are no fissures in it
Surah Qaf, Verse 6
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَدَدۡنَٰهَا وَأَلۡقَيۡنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِيَ وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجِۭ بَهِيجٖ
And the earth: how We stretched it out and cast firmly embedded mountains onto it and caused luxuriant plants of every kind to grow in it
Surah Qaf, Verse 7
تَبۡصِرَةٗ وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِكُلِّ عَبۡدٖ مُّنِيبٖ
an instruction and a reminder for every penitent human being
Surah Qaf, Verse 8
وَنَزَّلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءٗ مُّبَٰرَكٗا فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا بِهِۦ جَنَّـٰتٖ وَحَبَّ ٱلۡحَصِيدِ
And We sent down blessed water from the sky and made gardens grow by it and grain for harvesting
Surah Qaf, Verse 9
وَٱلنَّخۡلَ بَاسِقَٰتٖ لَّهَا طَلۡعٞ نَّضِيدٞ
and soaring date-palms with layered spathes
Surah Qaf, Verse 10
رِّزۡقٗا لِّلۡعِبَادِۖ وَأَحۡيَيۡنَا بِهِۦ بَلۡدَةٗ مَّيۡتٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡخُرُوجُ
as provision for Our slaves; by it We brought a dead land to life. That is how the Emergence will take place
Surah Qaf, Verse 11
كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٖ وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلرَّسِّ وَثَمُودُ
Before them the people of Nuh also denied the truth and the Companions of Rass and Thamud
Surah Qaf, Verse 12
وَعَادٞ وَفِرۡعَوۡنُ وَإِخۡوَٰنُ لُوطٖ
and ´Ad and Pharaoh and the brothers of Lut
Surah Qaf, Verse 13
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡأَيۡكَةِ وَقَوۡمُ تُبَّعٖۚ كُلّٞ كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِ
and the Companions of the Thicket and the people of Tubba´. Each one denied the Messengers and My promise proved true
Surah Qaf, Verse 14
أَفَعَيِينَا بِٱلۡخَلۡقِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ فِي لَبۡسٖ مِّنۡ خَلۡقٖ جَدِيدٖ
Were We exhausted by the first creation? Yet they are dubious about the new creation
Surah Qaf, Verse 15
وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ وَنَعۡلَمُ مَا تُوَسۡوِسُ بِهِۦ نَفۡسُهُۥۖ وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَيۡهِ مِنۡ حَبۡلِ ٱلۡوَرِيدِ
We created man and We know what his own self whispers to him. We are nearer to him than his jugular vein
Surah Qaf, Verse 16
إِذۡ يَتَلَقَّى ٱلۡمُتَلَقِّيَانِ عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٞ
And the two recording angels are recording, sitting on the right and on the left
Surah Qaf, Verse 17
مَّا يَلۡفِظُ مِن قَوۡلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيۡهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٞ
He does not utter a single word, without a watcher by him, pen in hand
Surah Qaf, Verse 18
وَجَآءَتۡ سَكۡرَةُ ٱلۡمَوۡتِ بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنتَ مِنۡهُ تَحِيدُ
The throes of death come revealing the truth. That is what you were trying to evade
Surah Qaf, Verse 19
وَنُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمُ ٱلۡوَعِيدِ
The Trumpet will be blown. That is the Day of the Threat
Surah Qaf, Verse 20
وَجَآءَتۡ كُلُّ نَفۡسٖ مَّعَهَا سَآئِقٞ وَشَهِيدٞ
Every self will come together with a driver and a witness
Surah Qaf, Verse 21
لَّقَدۡ كُنتَ فِي غَفۡلَةٖ مِّنۡ هَٰذَا فَكَشَفۡنَا عَنكَ غِطَآءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ حَدِيدٞ
´You were heedless of this so We have stripped you of your covering and today your sight is sharp.´
Surah Qaf, Verse 22
وَقَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ هَٰذَا مَا لَدَيَّ عَتِيدٌ
His inseparable comrade will say, ´This is what I have ready for you.´
Surah Qaf, Verse 23
أَلۡقِيَا فِي جَهَنَّمَ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ عَنِيدٖ
´Hurl into Hell every obdurate kafir
Surah Qaf, Verse 24
مَّنَّاعٖ لِّلۡخَيۡرِ مُعۡتَدٖ مُّرِيبٍ
impeder of good, doubt-causing aggressor
Surah Qaf, Verse 25
ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَأَلۡقِيَاهُ فِي ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلشَّدِيدِ
who set up another god together with Allah. Hurl him into the terrible punishment.´
Surah Qaf, Verse 26
۞قَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ رَبَّنَا مَآ أَطۡغَيۡتُهُۥ وَلَٰكِن كَانَ فِي ضَلَٰلِۭ بَعِيدٖ
His inseparable comrade will say, ´Our Lord, I did not make him overstep the limits. He was, in any case, far astray.´
Surah Qaf, Verse 27
قَالَ لَا تَخۡتَصِمُواْ لَدَيَّ وَقَدۡ قَدَّمۡتُ إِلَيۡكُم بِٱلۡوَعِيدِ
He will say, ´Do not argue in My presence when I gave you advance warning of the Threat
Surah Qaf, Verse 28
مَا يُبَدَّلُ ٱلۡقَوۡلُ لَدَيَّ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِظَلَّـٰمٖ لِّلۡعَبِيدِ
My Word, once given, is not subject to change and I do not wrong My slaves.´
Surah Qaf, Verse 29
يَوۡمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ ٱمۡتَلَأۡتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلۡ مِن مَّزِيدٖ
On the Day He says to Hell, ´Are you full?´ it will ask, ´Are there no more to come?´
Surah Qaf, Verse 30
وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ غَيۡرَ بَعِيدٍ
And the Garden will be brought up close to those with taqwa, not far away
Surah Qaf, Verse 31
هَٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِكُلِّ أَوَّابٍ حَفِيظٖ
´This is what you were promised. It is for every careful penitent
Surah Qaf, Verse 32
مَّنۡ خَشِيَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنَ بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَجَآءَ بِقَلۡبٖ مُّنِيبٍ
those who fear the All-Merciful in the Unseen and come with a contrite heart
Surah Qaf, Verse 33
ٱدۡخُلُوهَا بِسَلَٰمٖۖ ذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمُ ٱلۡخُلُودِ
Enter it in peace. This is the Day of Timeless Eternity.´
Surah Qaf, Verse 34
لَهُم مَّا يَشَآءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيۡنَا مَزِيدٞ
They will have there everything they want and with Us there is still more
Surah Qaf, Verse 35
وَكَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّن قَرۡنٍ هُمۡ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشٗا فَنَقَّبُواْ فِي ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ هَلۡ مِن مَّحِيصٍ
How many generations before them We destroyed who had greater force than them and scoured many lands! Did they find any way of escape
Surah Qaf, Verse 36
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكۡرَىٰ لِمَن كَانَ لَهُۥ قَلۡبٌ أَوۡ أَلۡقَى ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٞ
There is a reminder in that for anyone who has a heart, or who listens well, having seen the evidence
Surah Qaf, Verse 37
وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا فِي سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٖ وَمَا مَسَّنَا مِن لُّغُوبٖ
We created the heavens and the earth, and everything between them, in six days and We were not affected by fatigue
Surah Qaf, Verse 38
فَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ قَبۡلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمۡسِ وَقَبۡلَ ٱلۡغُرُوبِ
So be patient in the face of what they say and glorify your Lord with praise before the rising of the sun and before it sets
Surah Qaf, Verse 39
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيۡلِ فَسَبِّحۡهُ وَأَدۡبَٰرَ ٱلسُّجُودِ
And glorify Him during the night and after you have prostrated
Surah Qaf, Verse 40
وَٱسۡتَمِعۡ يَوۡمَ يُنَادِ ٱلۡمُنَادِ مِن مَّكَانٖ قَرِيبٖ
Listen out for the Day when the Summoner shall call out from a nearby place
Surah Qaf, Verse 41
يَوۡمَ يَسۡمَعُونَ ٱلصَّيۡحَةَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمُ ٱلۡخُرُوجِ
The Day they hear the Blast in truth, that is the Day of Emergence
Surah Qaf, Verse 42
إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نُحۡيِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَإِلَيۡنَا ٱلۡمَصِيرُ
It is We who give life and cause to die and We are their final destination
Surah Qaf, Verse 43
يَوۡمَ تَشَقَّقُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ عَنۡهُمۡ سِرَاعٗاۚ ذَٰلِكَ حَشۡرٌ عَلَيۡنَا يَسِيرٞ
The Day the earth splits open all around them as they come rushing forth, that is a gathering, easy for Us to accomplish
Surah Qaf, Verse 44
نَّحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ عَلَيۡهِم بِجَبَّارٖۖ فَذَكِّرۡ بِٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ مَن يَخَافُ وَعِيدِ
We know best what they say. You are not a dictator over them. So remind, with the Qur´an, whoever fears My Threat
Surah Qaf, Verse 45
