Surah Adh-Dhariyat - English Translation by Aisha Bewley
وَٱلذَّـٰرِيَٰتِ ذَرۡوٗا
By the scatterers scattering
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 1
فَٱلۡحَٰمِلَٰتِ وِقۡرٗا
and those bearing weighty loads
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 2
فَٱلۡجَٰرِيَٰتِ يُسۡرٗا
and those speeding along with ease
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 3
فَٱلۡمُقَسِّمَٰتِ أَمۡرًا
and those apportioning the command
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 4
إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقٞ
what you are promised is certainly true —
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 5
وَإِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ لَوَٰقِعٞ
the Judgement will certainly take place
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 6
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡحُبُكِ
By Heaven with its oscillating orbits
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 7
إِنَّكُمۡ لَفِي قَوۡلٖ مُّخۡتَلِفٖ
you certainly have differing beliefs
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 8
يُؤۡفَكُ عَنۡهُ مَنۡ أُفِكَ
Averted from it is he who is averted
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 9
قُتِلَ ٱلۡخَرَّـٰصُونَ
Death to the conjecturers
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 10
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ فِي غَمۡرَةٖ سَاهُونَ
those who flounder in a glut of ignorance
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 11
يَسۡـَٔلُونَ أَيَّانَ يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ
asking, ´When is the Day of Judgement?´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 12
يَوۡمَ هُمۡ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفۡتَنُونَ
On the Day they are tormented by the Fire
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 13
ذُوقُواْ فِتۡنَتَكُمۡ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ
´Taste your torment! This is what you were trying to hasten!´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 14
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ وَعُيُونٍ
The people with taqwa will be among Gardens and Fountains
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 15
ءَاخِذِينَ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَبۡلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُحۡسِنِينَ
receiving what their Lord has given them. Certainly before that they were good-doers
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 16
كَانُواْ قَلِيلٗا مِّنَ ٱلَّيۡلِ مَا يَهۡجَعُونَ
The part of the night they spent asleep was small
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 17
وَبِٱلۡأَسۡحَارِ هُمۡ يَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ
and they would seek forgiveness before the dawn
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 18
وَفِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ
And beggars and the destitute received a due share of their wealth
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 19
وَفِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ءَايَٰتٞ لِّلۡمُوقِنِينَ
There are certainly Signs in the earth for people with certainty
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 20
وَفِيٓ أَنفُسِكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ
and in yourselves as well. Do you not then see
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 21
وَفِي ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزۡقُكُمۡ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ
Your provision is in heaven — and what you are promised
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 22
فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقّٞ مِّثۡلَ مَآ أَنَّكُمۡ تَنطِقُونَ
By the Lord of heaven and earth, it is certainly the truth, just as you have speech
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 23
هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيۡفِ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ ٱلۡمُكۡرَمِينَ
Has the story reached you of the honoured guests of Ibrahim
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 24
إِذۡ دَخَلُواْ عَلَيۡهِ فَقَالُواْ سَلَٰمٗاۖ قَالَ سَلَٰمٞ قَوۡمٞ مُّنكَرُونَ
When they entered his dwelling and said, ´Peace!´ he said, ´Peace, to people we do not know.´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 25
فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ فَجَآءَ بِعِجۡلٖ سَمِينٖ
So he slipped off to his household and brought a fattened calf
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 26
فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ إِلَيۡهِمۡ قَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ
He offered it to them and then exclaimed, ´Do you not then eat?´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 27
فَأَوۡجَسَ مِنۡهُمۡ خِيفَةٗۖ قَالُواْ لَا تَخَفۡۖ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمٖ
He felt afraid of them but they said, ´Do not be afraid!´ and gave him the good news of a son imbued with knowledge
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 28
فَأَقۡبَلَتِ ٱمۡرَأَتُهُۥ فِي صَرَّةٖ فَصَكَّتۡ وَجۡهَهَا وَقَالَتۡ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٞ
His wife came up with a shriek and struck her face and said, ´What, and me a barren old woman!´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 29
قَالُواْ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ
They said, ´That is what your Lord says. He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing.´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 30
۞قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكُمۡ أَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ
He inquired, ´What, then, is your business, messengers?´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 31
قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّآ أُرۡسِلۡنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمٖ مُّجۡرِمِينَ
They said, ´We have been sent to a people of evildoers
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 32
لِنُرۡسِلَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حِجَارَةٗ مِّن طِينٖ
to unleash upon them lumps of clay
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 33
مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ
earmarked by your Lord for the profligate.´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 34
فَأَخۡرَجۡنَا مَن كَانَ فِيهَا مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
We brought out all the muminun who were there
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 35
فَمَا وَجَدۡنَا فِيهَا غَيۡرَ بَيۡتٖ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ
but found in it only one house of Muslims
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 36
وَتَرَكۡنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِيمَ
And We left a Sign in it for those who fear the painful punishment
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 37
وَفِي مُوسَىٰٓ إِذۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ بِسُلۡطَٰنٖ مُّبِينٖ
And also in Musa when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 38
فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكۡنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَٰحِرٌ أَوۡ مَجۡنُونٞ
But he turned away with his forces, saying, ´A magician or a madman!´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 39
فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذۡنَٰهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٞ
So We seized him and his armies and hurled them into the sea, and he was to blame
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 40
وَفِي عَادٍ إِذۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلۡعَقِيمَ
And also in ´Ad when We unleashed against them the barren wind
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 41
مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَيۡءٍ أَتَتۡ عَلَيۡهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتۡهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِ
which left nothing it touched without turning it to dust
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 42
وَفِي ثَمُودَ إِذۡ قِيلَ لَهُمۡ تَمَتَّعُواْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٖ
And also in Thamud, when they were told: ´Enjoy yourselves a while!´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 43
فَعَتَوۡاْ عَنۡ أَمۡرِ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَهُمۡ يَنظُرُونَ
But they spurned their Lord´s command, so the Blast seized them as they looked
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 44
فَمَا ٱسۡتَطَٰعُواْ مِن قِيَامٖ وَمَا كَانُواْ مُنتَصِرِينَ
They could not stand upright and they were not helped
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 45
وَقَوۡمَ نُوحٖ مِّن قَبۡلُۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَوۡمٗا فَٰسِقِينَ
And the people of Nuh before, they were a people of deviators
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 46
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيۡنَٰهَا بِأَيۡيْدٖ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ
As for heaven — We built it with great power and gave it its vast expanse
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 47
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ فَرَشۡنَٰهَا فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمَٰهِدُونَ
And the earth — We spread it like a carpet and how well We smoothed it out
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 48
وَمِن كُلِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقۡنَا زَوۡجَيۡنِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَذَكَّرُونَ
And We created all things in pairs so that hopefully you would pay heed
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 49
فَفِرُّوٓاْ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۖ إِنِّي لَكُم مِّنۡهُ نَذِيرٞ مُّبِينٞ
So flee to Allah. Truly I bring you a clear warning from Him
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 50
وَلَا تَجۡعَلُواْ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَۖ إِنِّي لَكُم مِّنۡهُ نَذِيرٞ مُّبِينٞ
Do not set up another god together with Allah. Truly I bring you a clear warning from Him
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 51
كَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَتَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُواْ سَاحِرٌ أَوۡ مَجۡنُونٌ
Equally, no Messenger came to those before them without their saying, ´A magician or a madman!´
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 52
أَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِهِۦۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٞ طَاغُونَ
Did they bequeathe this to one another? Indeed they are an unbridled people
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 53
فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِمَلُومٖ
So turn away from them, for you are not to blame
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 54
وَذَكِّرۡ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
And remind them, for truly the muminun benefit from being reminded
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 55
وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ
I only created jinn and man to worship Me
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 56
مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنۡهُم مِّن رِّزۡقٖ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطۡعِمُونِ
I do not require any provision from them and I do not require them to nourish Me
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 57
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلۡقُوَّةِ ٱلۡمَتِينُ
Truly Allah, He is the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Sure
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 58
فَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ ذَنُوبٗا مِّثۡلَ ذَنُوبِ أَصۡحَٰبِهِمۡ فَلَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُونِ
Those who do wrong will have their due, the same as that of their friends. So they should not hurry Me
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 59
فَوَيۡلٞ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِن يَوۡمِهِمُ ٱلَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
Woe then to those who are kafir on account of the Day they have been promised
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 60
