Surah At-tur - English Translation by Aisha Bewley
وَٱلطُّورِ
By the Mount
Surah At-tur, Verse 1
وَكِتَٰبٖ مَّسۡطُورٖ
and an Inscribed Book
Surah At-tur, Verse 2
فِي رَقّٖ مَّنشُورٖ
on an Unfurled Scroll
Surah At-tur, Verse 3
وَٱلۡبَيۡتِ ٱلۡمَعۡمُورِ
by the Visited House
Surah At-tur, Verse 4
وَٱلسَّقۡفِ ٱلۡمَرۡفُوعِ
by the Raised Canopy
Surah At-tur, Verse 5
وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ ٱلۡمَسۡجُورِ
by the Overflowing Ocean
Surah At-tur, Verse 6
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ لَوَٰقِعٞ
your Lord´s punishment will certainly take place
Surah At-tur, Verse 7
مَّا لَهُۥ مِن دَافِعٖ
No one can ward it off
Surah At-tur, Verse 8
يَوۡمَ تَمُورُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ مَوۡرٗا
On the Day when heaven sways to and fro
Surah At-tur, Verse 9
وَتَسِيرُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ سَيۡرٗا
and the mountains shift about
Surah At-tur, Verse 10
فَوَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ
woe that Day to the deniers
Surah At-tur, Verse 11
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ فِي خَوۡضٖ يَلۡعَبُونَ
who play at frivolous games
Surah At-tur, Verse 12
يَوۡمَ يُدَعُّونَ إِلَىٰ نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ دَعًّا
the Day they are shoved roughly into the Fire of Hell
Surah At-tur, Verse 13
هَٰذِهِ ٱلنَّارُ ٱلَّتِي كُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ
´This is the Fire which you denied
Surah At-tur, Verse 14
أَفَسِحۡرٌ هَٰذَآ أَمۡ أَنتُمۡ لَا تُبۡصِرُونَ
So is this magic? Or is it that you do not see
Surah At-tur, Verse 15
ٱصۡلَوۡهَا فَٱصۡبِرُوٓاْ أَوۡ لَا تَصۡبِرُواْ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ إِنَّمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ
Roast in it! And bear it patiently or do not bear it patiently. It makes no difference either way. You are simply being repaid for what you did.´
Surah At-tur, Verse 16
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ وَنَعِيمٖ
The people who have taqwa will be in Gardens of Delight
Surah At-tur, Verse 17
فَٰكِهِينَ بِمَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ وَوَقَىٰهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ
savouring what their Lord has given them. Their Lord will safeguard them from the punishment of the Blazing Fire
Surah At-tur, Verse 18
كُلُواْ وَٱشۡرَبُواْ هَنِيٓـَٔۢا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ
´Eat and drink with relish for what you did.´
Surah At-tur, Verse 19
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ سُرُرٖ مَّصۡفُوفَةٖۖ وَزَوَّجۡنَٰهُم بِحُورٍ عِينٖ
They will recline on couches ranged in rows and We will marry them to dark-eyed maidens
Surah At-tur, Verse 20
وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَٱتَّبَعَتۡهُمۡ ذُرِّيَّتُهُم بِإِيمَٰنٍ أَلۡحَقۡنَا بِهِمۡ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمۡ وَمَآ أَلَتۡنَٰهُم مِّنۡ عَمَلِهِم مِّن شَيۡءٖۚ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيِٕۭ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهِينٞ
And We will unite those who had iman with their offspring, who followed them in iman, and We will not undervalue their own actions in any way. Every man is in pledge for what he earned
Surah At-tur, Verse 21
وَأَمۡدَدۡنَٰهُم بِفَٰكِهَةٖ وَلَحۡمٖ مِّمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ
We will supply them with any kind of fruit and meat that they desire
Surah At-tur, Verse 22
يَتَنَٰزَعُونَ فِيهَا كَأۡسٗا لَّا لَغۡوٞ فِيهَا وَلَا تَأۡثِيمٞ
They will pass round there a drinking cup to one another with no foolish talk and no wrong action in it
Surah At-tur, Verse 23
۞وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ غِلۡمَانٞ لَّهُمۡ كَأَنَّهُمۡ لُؤۡلُؤٞ مَّكۡنُونٞ
Circulating among them there will be youths like hidden pearls
Surah At-tur, Verse 24
وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
Some of them will come up to others and they will question one another
Surah At-tur, Verse 25
قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبۡلُ فِيٓ أَهۡلِنَا مُشۡفِقِينَ
They will say, ´Beforehand we used to live in fear among our families
Surah At-tur, Verse 26
فَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡنَا وَوَقَىٰنَا عَذَابَ ٱلسَّمُومِ
But Allah was gracious to us and safeguarded us from the punishment of the searing wind
Surah At-tur, Verse 27
إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبۡلُ نَدۡعُوهُۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡبَرُّ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Beforehand we certainly used to call on Him because He is the All-Good, the Most Merciful.´
Surah At-tur, Verse 28
فَذَكِّرۡ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِنِعۡمَتِ رَبِّكَ بِكَاهِنٖ وَلَا مَجۡنُونٍ
Remind them then! For, by the blessing of your Lord, you are neither a soothsayer nor a madman
Surah At-tur, Verse 29
أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٞ نَّتَرَبَّصُ بِهِۦ رَيۡبَ ٱلۡمَنُونِ
Or do they say, ´He is a poet and We are waiting for something bad to happen to him´
Surah At-tur, Verse 30
قُلۡ تَرَبَّصُواْ فَإِنِّي مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُتَرَبِّصِينَ
Say: ´Wait then! I am waiting with you.´
Surah At-tur, Verse 31
أَمۡ تَأۡمُرُهُمۡ أَحۡلَٰمُهُم بِهَٰذَآۚ أَمۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٞ طَاغُونَ
Is it their intellects that direct them to say this or is it that they are an unbridled people
Surah At-tur, Verse 32
أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ تَقَوَّلَهُۥۚ بَل لَّا يُؤۡمِنُونَ
Or do they say, ´He has simply made it up´? No, the truth is they have no iman
Surah At-tur, Verse 33
فَلۡيَأۡتُواْ بِحَدِيثٖ مِّثۡلِهِۦٓ إِن كَانُواْ صَٰدِقِينَ
Let them produce a discourse like it if they are telling the truth
Surah At-tur, Verse 34
أَمۡ خُلِقُواْ مِنۡ غَيۡرِ شَيۡءٍ أَمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡخَٰلِقُونَ
Or were they created out of nothing, or are they the creators
Surah At-tur, Verse 35
أَمۡ خَلَقُواْ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَۚ بَل لَّا يُوقِنُونَ
Or did they create the heavens and the earth? No, in truth they have no certainty
Surah At-tur, Verse 36
أَمۡ عِندَهُمۡ خَزَآئِنُ رَبِّكَ أَمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡمُصَۜيۡطِرُونَ
Or do they possess the treasuries of your Lord or do they have control of them
Surah At-tur, Verse 37
أَمۡ لَهُمۡ سُلَّمٞ يَسۡتَمِعُونَ فِيهِۖ فَلۡيَأۡتِ مُسۡتَمِعُهُم بِسُلۡطَٰنٖ مُّبِينٍ
Or do they have a ladder on which they listen? Then let their listener bring clear evidence
Surah At-tur, Verse 38
أَمۡ لَهُ ٱلۡبَنَٰتُ وَلَكُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ
Or does He have daughters whereas you have sons
Surah At-tur, Verse 39
أَمۡ تَسۡـَٔلُهُمۡ أَجۡرٗا فَهُم مِّن مَّغۡرَمٖ مُّثۡقَلُونَ
Or do you ask them for a wage so they are weighed down with debt
Surah At-tur, Verse 40
أَمۡ عِندَهُمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبُ فَهُمۡ يَكۡتُبُونَ
Or is the Unseen in their hands so they can write out what is to happen
Surah At-tur, Verse 41
أَمۡ يُرِيدُونَ كَيۡدٗاۖ فَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ هُمُ ٱلۡمَكِيدُونَ
Or do they desire to dupe you? But the duped ones are those who are kafir
Surah At-tur, Verse 42
أَمۡ لَهُمۡ إِلَٰهٌ غَيۡرُ ٱللَّهِۚ سُبۡحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشۡرِكُونَ
Or do they have some god other than Allah? Glory be to Allah above any idol they propose
Surah At-tur, Verse 43
وَإِن يَرَوۡاْ كِسۡفٗا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ سَاقِطٗا يَقُولُواْ سَحَابٞ مَّرۡكُومٞ
If they saw a lump of heaven falling down, they would just say, ´Banked-up clouds!´
Surah At-tur, Verse 44
فَذَرۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِي فِيهِ يُصۡعَقُونَ
Leave them then until they meet their Day when they will be struck down by the Blast
Surah At-tur, Verse 45
يَوۡمَ لَا يُغۡنِي عَنۡهُمۡ كَيۡدُهُمۡ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَا هُمۡ يُنصَرُونَ
the Day their ploys will not profit them at all and they will not be helped
Surah At-tur, Verse 46
وَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ عَذَابٗا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ
And those who do wrong will have a punishment besides that but most of them do not know it
Surah At-tur, Verse 47
وَٱصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ بِأَعۡيُنِنَاۖ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ
So wait steadfastly for the judgement of your Lord — you are certainly before Our eyes. And glorify and praise your Lord when you get up
Surah At-tur, Verse 48
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيۡلِ فَسَبِّحۡهُ وَإِدۡبَٰرَ ٱلنُّجُومِ
And glorify Him in the night and when the stars fade out
Surah At-tur, Verse 49
