Surah At-tur - English Translation by Dr Laleh Bakhtiar
وَٱلطُّورِ
By the mount
Surah At-tur, Verse 1
وَكِتَٰبٖ مَّسۡطُورٖ
and by a Book inscribed
Surah At-tur, Verse 2
فِي رَقّٖ مَّنشُورٖ
on an unrolled scroll of parchment
Surah At-tur, Verse 3
وَٱلۡبَيۡتِ ٱلۡمَعۡمُورِ
and by the frequented House
Surah At-tur, Verse 4
وَٱلسَّقۡفِ ٱلۡمَرۡفُوعِ
and by the exalted roof
Surah At-tur, Verse 5
وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ ٱلۡمَسۡجُورِ
and that which is poured forth over the seas
Surah At-tur, Verse 6
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ لَوَٰقِعٞ
truly, the punishment of Thy Lord is that which falls
Surah At-tur, Verse 7
مَّا لَهُۥ مِن دَافِعٖ
There is no one who averts it
Surah At-tur, Verse 8
يَوۡمَ تَمُورُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ مَوۡرٗا
On a Day when the heaven will spin a spinning
Surah At-tur, Verse 9
وَتَسِيرُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ سَيۡرٗا
and the mountains will journey a journey
Surah At-tur, Verse 10
فَوَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ
Then, woe on a Day to the ones who deny
Surah At-tur, Verse 11
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ فِي خَوۡضٖ يَلۡعَبُونَ
they, those are engaging in idle talk, play
Surah At-tur, Verse 12
يَوۡمَ يُدَعُّونَ إِلَىٰ نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ دَعًّا
on a Day they will be driven away with force to the fire of hell with a driving away
Surah At-tur, Verse 13
هَٰذِهِ ٱلنَّارُ ٱلَّتِي كُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ
This is the fire which you had been denying
Surah At-tur, Verse 14
أَفَسِحۡرٌ هَٰذَآ أَمۡ أَنتُمۡ لَا تُبۡصِرُونَ
Is this, then, sorcery or is it that you perceive not
Surah At-tur, Verse 15
ٱصۡلَوۡهَا فَٱصۡبِرُوٓاْ أَوۡ لَا تَصۡبِرُواْ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ إِنَّمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ
Roast you in it! Then, have patience, or you endure patiently not, it is all the same to you. You will be only given recompense for what you had been doing
Surah At-tur, Verse 16
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ وَنَعِيمٖ
Truly, the ones who are Godfearing will be in Gardens and bliss
Surah At-tur, Verse 17
فَٰكِهِينَ بِمَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ وَوَقَىٰهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ
ones who are joyful for what their Lord gave them. And their Lord protected them from the punishment of hellfire
Surah At-tur, Verse 18
كُلُواْ وَٱشۡرَبُواْ هَنِيٓـَٔۢا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ
Eat and drink wholesomely because of what you had been doing
Surah At-tur, Verse 19
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ سُرُرٖ مَّصۡفُوفَةٖۖ وَزَوَّجۡنَٰهُم بِحُورٍ عِينٖ
They will be ones who are reclining on couches arrayed. And We will give in marriage to them lovely, most beautiful eyed ones
Surah At-tur, Verse 20
وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَٱتَّبَعَتۡهُمۡ ذُرِّيَّتُهُم بِإِيمَٰنٍ أَلۡحَقۡنَا بِهِمۡ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمۡ وَمَآ أَلَتۡنَٰهُم مِّنۡ عَمَلِهِم مِّن شَيۡءٖۚ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيِٕۭ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهِينٞ
And those who believed and their offspring who followed them in belief, We caused them to join their offspring. And We deprived them not of anything of their actions. Every man will be pledged for what he earned
Surah At-tur, Verse 21
وَأَمۡدَدۡنَٰهُم بِفَٰكِهَةٖ وَلَحۡمٖ مِّمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ
And We furnished relief to them with sweet fruit and meat such as that for which they lust
Surah At-tur, Verse 22
يَتَنَٰزَعُونَ فِيهَا كَأۡسٗا لَّا لَغۡوٞ فِيهَا وَلَا تَأۡثِيمٞ
They will contend with one another for a cup around which there is no idle talk nor accusation of sinfulness
Surah At-tur, Verse 23
۞وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ غِلۡمَانٞ لَّهُمۡ كَأَنَّهُمۡ لُؤۡلُؤٞ مَّكۡنُونٞ
And boys of theirs will go around them as if they had been well-guarded pearls
Surah At-tur, Verse 24
وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
And some of them will come forward to some others demanding of one another
Surah At-tur, Verse 25
قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبۡلُ فِيٓ أَهۡلِنَا مُشۡفِقِينَ
They would say: Truly, we had been before ones who are apprehensive among our people
Surah At-tur, Verse 26
فَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡنَا وَوَقَىٰنَا عَذَابَ ٱلسَّمُومِ
but God showed grace to us and protected us from the punishment of the burning wind
Surah At-tur, Verse 27
إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبۡلُ نَدۡعُوهُۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡبَرُّ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Truly, we had been calling to Him before. Truly, He, He is The Source of Goodness, The Compassionate
Surah At-tur, Verse 28
فَذَكِّرۡ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِنِعۡمَتِ رَبِّكَ بِكَاهِنٖ وَلَا مَجۡنُونٍ
So remind! Thou art not, by the divine blessing of thy Lord, a soothsayer nor one who is possessed
Surah At-tur, Verse 29
أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٞ نَّتَرَبَّصُ بِهِۦ رَيۡبَ ٱلۡمَنُونِ
Or they say: A poet! We await for the setback of fate for him
Surah At-tur, Verse 30
قُلۡ تَرَبَّصُواْ فَإِنِّي مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُتَرَبِّصِينَ
Say: Await for I am with the ones who are waiting
Surah At-tur, Verse 31
أَمۡ تَأۡمُرُهُمۡ أَحۡلَٰمُهُم بِهَٰذَآۚ أَمۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٞ طَاغُونَ
Or command their faculties of understanding to this? Or are they a folk, ones who are defiant
Surah At-tur, Verse 32
أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ تَقَوَّلَهُۥۚ بَل لَّا يُؤۡمِنُونَ
Or say they: He fabricated it? Nay! They believe not
Surah At-tur, Verse 33
فَلۡيَأۡتُواْ بِحَدِيثٖ مِّثۡلِهِۦٓ إِن كَانُواْ صَٰدِقِينَ
Then, let them bring a discourse like it, if they had been ones who are sincere
Surah At-tur, Verse 34
أَمۡ خُلِقُواْ مِنۡ غَيۡرِ شَيۡءٍ أَمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡخَٰلِقُونَ
Or were they created out of nothing? Or are they ones who are creators of themselves
Surah At-tur, Verse 35
أَمۡ خَلَقُواْ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَۚ بَل لَّا يُوقِنُونَ
Or created they the heavens and the earth? Nay! They are not certain
Surah At-tur, Verse 36
أَمۡ عِندَهُمۡ خَزَآئِنُ رَبِّكَ أَمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡمُصَۜيۡطِرُونَ
Or are the treasures of thy Lord with them? Or are they ones who are registrars
Surah At-tur, Verse 37
أَمۡ لَهُمۡ سُلَّمٞ يَسۡتَمِعُونَ فِيهِۖ فَلۡيَأۡتِ مُسۡتَمِعُهُم بِسُلۡطَٰنٖ مُّبِينٍ
Or have they a ladder by means of which they listen? Then, let ones who are listening bring a clear authority
Surah At-tur, Verse 38
أَمۡ لَهُ ٱلۡبَنَٰتُ وَلَكُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ
Or has He daughters and they have sons
Surah At-tur, Verse 39
أَمۡ تَسۡـَٔلُهُمۡ أَجۡرٗا فَهُم مِّن مَّغۡرَمٖ مُّثۡقَلُونَ
Or hast thou asked them for a compensation so that they are from something owed ones who will be weighed down
Surah At-tur, Verse 40
أَمۡ عِندَهُمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبُ فَهُمۡ يَكۡتُبُونَ
Or is the unseen with them and they write it down
Surah At-tur, Verse 41
أَمۡ يُرِيدُونَ كَيۡدٗاۖ فَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ هُمُ ٱلۡمَكِيدُونَ
Or want they cunning? But it is those who were ungrateful. They are the ones who are outwitted
Surah At-tur, Verse 42
أَمۡ لَهُمۡ إِلَٰهٌ غَيۡرُ ٱللَّهِۚ سُبۡحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشۡرِكُونَ
Or have they a god other than God? Glory be to God above partners they ascribe
Surah At-tur, Verse 43
وَإِن يَرَوۡاْ كِسۡفٗا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ سَاقِطٗا يَقُولُواْ سَحَابٞ مَّرۡكُومٞ
And if they consider pieces of the heaven descending, they would say: Heaped up clouds
Surah At-tur, Verse 44
فَذَرۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِي فِيهِ يُصۡعَقُونَ
So forsake them until they encounter their day in which they will be swooning
Surah At-tur, Verse 45
يَوۡمَ لَا يُغۡنِي عَنۡهُمۡ كَيۡدُهُمۡ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَا هُمۡ يُنصَرُونَ
A Day when their cunning will avail them not at all nor will they be helped
Surah At-tur, Verse 46
وَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ عَذَابٗا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ
And, truly, for those who did wrong there is a punishment besides that, but most of them know not
Surah At-tur, Verse 47
وَٱصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ بِأَعۡيُنِنَاۖ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ
So have thou patience for the determination of thy Lord, for, truly, thou art under Our eyes; and glorify the praises of thy Lord when thou hast stood up at the time of dawn
Surah At-tur, Verse 48
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيۡلِ فَسَبِّحۡهُ وَإِدۡبَٰرَ ٱلنُّجُومِ
and glorify at night and the drawing back of the stars
Surah At-tur, Verse 49
