Surah Adh-Dhariyat - English Translation by Ali Unal


وَٱلذَّـٰرِيَٰتِ ذَرۡوٗا

By those that (like winds) scatter far and wide
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 1


فَٱلۡحَٰمِلَٰتِ وِقۡرٗا

And those that (like clouds) bear heavy burdens
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 2


فَٱلۡجَٰرِيَٰتِ يُسۡرٗا

And those (like ships) that run with gentle ease
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 3


فَٱلۡمُقَسِّمَٰتِ أَمۡرًا

And those (angels) who distribute by command (of God, His provision of rain and innumerable other blessings)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 4


إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقٞ

What you are promised is most certainly true
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 5


وَإِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ لَوَٰقِعٞ

The Last Judgment is bound to take place
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 6


وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡحُبُكِ

By the heaven full of braided pathways (for the movement of angels and celestial objects, for the sending down of God’s commands, and for the ascent of the diverse supplications of conscious beings by speech or act or need)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 7


إِنَّكُمۡ لَفِي قَوۡلٖ مُّخۡتَلِفٖ

Surely you are in contradicting views (about the Qur’an and how to describe it)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 8


يُؤۡفَكُ عَنۡهُ مَنۡ أُفِكَ

Whoever has been deluded from it (the Qur’an) is (first) self-deluded (turning away from the right way in thought, belief, and action)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 9


قُتِلَ ٱلۡخَرَّـٰصُونَ

Be away from God’s mercy the liars building on conjecture
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 10


ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ فِي غَمۡرَةٖ سَاهُونَ

Who are quite heedless (of truth) in an abyss of ignorance
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 11


يَسۡـَٔلُونَ أَيَّانَ يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ

They ask: "When is the Day of Judgment
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 12


يَوۡمَ هُمۡ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفۡتَنُونَ

The Day when they will be tormented over the Fire
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 13


ذُوقُواْ فِتۡنَتَكُمۡ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ

Taste your torment (that you have brought upon yourselves). This is what you (in mockery) would ask to be hastened
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 14


إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ وَعُيُونٍ

As for the God-revering, pious: they will be in Gardens and springs
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 15


ءَاخِذِينَ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَبۡلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُحۡسِنِينَ

Taking whatever their Lord grants them. For they were, before that, devoted to doing God’s commands, aware that God was seeing them
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 16


كَانُواْ قَلِيلٗا مِّنَ ٱلَّيۡلِ مَا يَهۡجَعُونَ

They used to sleep but little by night (almost never missing the Tahajjud Prayer)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 17


وَبِٱلۡأَسۡحَارِ هُمۡ يَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ

And in the hour of early dawn, they would implore God’s forgiveness
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 18


وَفِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ

And in their wealth the poor (who had to beg) and the destitute (who did not beg out of shame) had due share (a right they gladly honored)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 19


وَفِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ءَايَٰتٞ لِّلۡمُوقِنِينَ

On the earth there are (clear) signs (of God’s Oneness as Lord and Sovereign) for those who seek certainty
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 20


وَفِيٓ أَنفُسِكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ

And also in your own selves. Will you then not see (the truth)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 21


وَفِي ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزۡقُكُمۡ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ

And in the heaven there is your provision, and what you are promised
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 22


فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقّٞ مِّثۡلَ مَآ أَنَّكُمۡ تَنطِقُونَ

Then, by the Lord of the heaven and the earth, this (promise) is as much (a fact conveyed to you) as that you speak
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 23


هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيۡفِ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ ٱلۡمُكۡرَمِينَ

Has there come to you report of Abraham’s honored guests
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 24


إِذۡ دَخَلُواْ عَلَيۡهِ فَقَالُواْ سَلَٰمٗاۖ قَالَ سَلَٰمٞ قَوۡمٞ مُّنكَرُونَ

They presented themselves before him and bade him peace. He said (in returning their greeting) "Peace!" (and thought:) A people unknown
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 25


فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ فَجَآءَ بِعِجۡلٖ سَمِينٖ

He withdrew to his household and brought a (roast of) fatted calf
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 26


فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ إِلَيۡهِمۡ قَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ

He placed it before them, and said: "Will you not eat
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 27


فَأَوۡجَسَ مِنۡهُمۡ خِيفَةٗۖ قَالُواْ لَا تَخَفۡۖ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمٖ

(When he saw that they did not eat) he became apprehensive of them. They said: "Do not be apprehensive!" They gave him the glad tidings of (the birth of) a son to be endowed with profound knowledge
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 28


فَأَقۡبَلَتِ ٱمۡرَأَتُهُۥ فِي صَرَّةٖ فَصَكَّتۡ وَجۡهَهَا وَقَالَتۡ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٞ

Then his wife came forward, groaning, and struck her forehead, saying: "How shall I bear a child, (being) a barren old woman
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 29


قَالُواْ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ

They said: "Thus has your Lord decreed. Surely He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 30


۞قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكُمۡ أَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ

He (Abraham) said: "Then (after that), what is your concern, O you (heavenly) envoys
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 31


قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّآ أُرۡسِلۡنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمٖ مُّجۡرِمِينَ

They said: "Indeed, we have been sent to a people who are all criminals
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 32


لِنُرۡسِلَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حِجَارَةٗ مِّن طِينٖ

So that We may send upon them stones of baked clay
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 33


مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ

Marked out in your Lord’s Presence for (the destruction of) the people wasteful (of their God-given faculties and) committing excesses
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 34


فَأَخۡرَجۡنَا مَن كَانَ فِيهَا مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

We brought out (from the land) those in it who were believers
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 35


فَمَا وَجَدۡنَا فِيهَا غَيۡرَ بَيۡتٖ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ

But We did not find there any but a single house of Muslims (those wholly submitted to God)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 36


وَتَرَكۡنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِيمَ

We left there a clear sign (of the truth of God’s Messages) for those who fear the painful punishment
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 37


وَفِي مُوسَىٰٓ إِذۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ بِسُلۡطَٰنٖ مُّبِينٖ

And in (the exemplary history of) Moses too (there is a clear sign): We sent him as Messenger to the Pharaoh with an evident authority
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 38


فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكۡنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَٰحِرٌ أَوۡ مَجۡنُونٞ

But the Pharaoh turned away (from Our Message), together with his hosts, and said: "(Moses is either) a sorcerer or a madman
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 39


فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذۡنَٰهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٞ

So We seized him and his hosts, and hurled them into the sea. And he was self-accused, remorseful (too late, when he was drowning)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 40


وَفِي عَادٍ إِذۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلۡعَقِيمَ

And in (the exemplary history of the tribe of) ‘Ad also (there is a clear sign), when We sent upon them the devastating wind
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 41


مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَيۡءٍ أَتَتۡ عَلَيۡهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتۡهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِ

It spared nothing that it reached, but made it like ashes
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 42


وَفِي ثَمُودَ إِذۡ قِيلَ لَهُمۡ تَمَتَّعُواْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٖ

And in (the exemplary history of the tribe of) Thamud also (there is a clear sign), when they (were given respite and) it was said to them: "Enjoy life for a little while
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 43


فَعَتَوۡاْ عَنۡ أَمۡرِ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَهُمۡ يَنظُرُونَ

But they rebelled against their Lord’s decree, so the thunderbolt (along with the blast) seized them, even while they were looking on
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 44


فَمَا ٱسۡتَطَٰعُواْ مِن قِيَامٖ وَمَا كَانُواْ مُنتَصِرِينَ

They were not able to rise up (still less escape the punishment), nor were able to receive help
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 45


وَقَوۡمَ نُوحٖ مِّن قَبۡلُۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَوۡمٗا فَٰسِقِينَ

(And We had destroyed) the people of Noah before. They were a people transgressing (God’s bounds)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 46


وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيۡنَٰهَا بِأَيۡيْدٖ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

And the heaven, We have constructed it mightily, and it is surely We Who have vast power, and keep expanding it
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 47


وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ فَرَشۡنَٰهَا فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمَٰهِدُونَ

And the earth, We have spread it out, and how excellent We are in spreading it out (like a cradle)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 48


وَمِن كُلِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقۡنَا زَوۡجَيۡنِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَذَكَّرُونَ

And all things We have created in pairs, so that you may reflect and be mindful
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 49


فَفِرُّوٓاْ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۖ إِنِّي لَكُم مِّنۡهُ نَذِيرٞ مُّبِينٞ

So, flee to (refuge in) God. I am surely from Him to you a plain warner
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 50


وَلَا تَجۡعَلُواْ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَۖ إِنِّي لَكُم مِّنۡهُ نَذِيرٞ مُّبِينٞ

And do not set up another deity besides God. I am surely a plain warner from Him to you
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 51


كَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَتَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُواْ سَاحِرٌ أَوۡ مَجۡنُونٌ

Similarly, no Messenger came to the peoples who lived before them but they said of him (in like manner): "A sorcerer or a madman
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 52


أَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِهِۦۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٞ طَاغُونَ

Have they bequeathed this to one another (by way of response)? They were indeed a rebellious people
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 53


فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِمَلُومٖ

So, turn away from disputing with them, and you are not to be blamed (for doing so)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 54


وَذَكِّرۡ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

But remind and warn, for reminding and warning are of benefit to the believers
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 55


وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ

I have not created the jinn and humankind but to (know and) worship Me (exclusively)
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 56


مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنۡهُم مِّن رِّزۡقٖ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطۡعِمُونِ

I demand of them no provision, nor do I demand that they should feed Me
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 57


إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلۡقُوَّةِ ٱلۡمَتِينُ

Surely God – it is He Who is the All-Providing, Lord of all might, and the All-Forceful
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 58


فَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ ذَنُوبٗا مِّثۡلَ ذَنُوبِ أَصۡحَٰبِهِمۡ فَلَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُونِ

So surely those who commit the greatest wrong (namely, not believing in and worshipping God or associating partners with Him in worship), will have their share (of the punishment) like the share of their fellows (of old who were destroyed). Then, let them not ask Me to hasten it
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 59


فَوَيۡلٞ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِن يَوۡمِهِمُ ٱلَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ

Then, woe to those who disbelieve because of their Day with which they are threatened
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 60
