Surah Al-Maarij - English Translation by Muhammad Taqi Ud Din Al Hilali And Muhammad Muhsin Khan

سَأَلَ سَآئِلُۢ بِعَذَابٖ وَاقِعٖ

A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 1

لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ لَيۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٞ

Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 2

مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِي ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ

From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 3

تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيۡهِ فِي يَوۡمٖ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِينَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٖ

The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 4

فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرٗا جَمِيلًا

So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 5

إِنَّهُمۡ يَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِيدٗا

Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 6

وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبٗا

But We see it (quite) near
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 7

يَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ

The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 8

وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ

And the mountains will be like flakes of wool
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 9

وَلَا يَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمٗا

And no friend will ask of a friend
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 10

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ يَفۡتَدِي مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمِئِذِۭ بِبَنِيهِ

Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 11

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ

And his wife and his brother
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 12

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِي تُـٔۡوِيهِ

And his kindred who sheltered him
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 13

وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِيعٗا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ

And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 14

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ

By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 15

نَزَّاعَةٗ لِّلشَّوَىٰ

Taking away (burning completely) the head skin
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 16

تَدۡعُواْ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page]
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 17

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰٓ

And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 18

۞إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا

Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 19

إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعٗا

Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 20

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوعًا

And niggardly when good touches him
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 21

إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ

Except those devoted to Salat (prayers)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 22

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُونَ

Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 23

وَٱلَّذِينَ فِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ

And those in whose wealth there is a known right
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 24

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ

For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 25

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ

And those who believe in the Day of Recompense
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 26

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ

And those who fear the torment of their Lord
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 27

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَيۡرُ مَأۡمُونٖ

Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 28

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَٰفِظُونَ

And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 29

إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَيۡرُ مَلُومِينَ

Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 30

فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ

But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 31

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَٰعُونَ

And those who keep their trusts and covenants
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 32

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمۡ قَآئِمُونَ

And those who stand firm in their testimonies
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 33

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ يُحَافِظُونَ

And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 34

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ مُّكۡرَمُونَ

Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 35

فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِينَ

So what is the matter with those who disbelieve that they hasten to listen from you (O Muhammad SAW), in order to belie you and to mock at you, and at Allah's Book (this Quran)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 36

عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ

(Sitting) in groups on the right and on the left (of you, O Muhammad SAW)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 37

أَيَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٖ

Does every man of them hope to enter the Paradise of delight
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 38

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ

No, that is not like that! Verily, We have created them out of that which they know
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 39

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ

So I swear by the Lord of all [the three hundred and sixty (360)] points of sunrise and sunset in the east and the west that surely We are Able
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 40
