Surah Al-Maarij - English Translation by Muhammad Mahmoud Ghali
سَأَلَ سَآئِلُۢ بِعَذَابٖ وَاقِعٖ
A questioner asked of a befalling torment
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 1
لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ لَيۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٞ
For the disbelievers, for which there is no repelling
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 2
مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِي ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ
From Allah, The Owner of the Stairways
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 3
تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيۡهِ فِي يَوۡمٖ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِينَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٖ
To Him the Angels and the Spirit ascend with difficulty to Him in a Day whereof the determined (length) is fifty thousand years
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 4
فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرٗا جَمِيلًا
So (endure) patiently with a becoming patience
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 5
إِنَّهُمۡ يَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِيدٗا
Surely they see it far off
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 6
وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبٗا
And We see it near
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 7
يَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ
On the Day when the heaven will be as molten metal
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 8
وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ
And the mountains will be as wool-tufts
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 9
وَلَا يَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمٗا
And no intimate (friend) will ask (another) intimate friend
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 10
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ يَفۡتَدِي مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمِئِذِۭ بِبَنِيهِ
(As) they are made to behold them (i.e., each other). The criminal would like that he might ransom himself of the torment upon that Day (even) by his seeds
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 11
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ
And his female companion and his brother
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 12
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِي تُـٔۡوِيهِ
And the nearest of his kin who gave him abode
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 13
وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِيعٗا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
And whoever is in the earth all together, so that thereafter it might deliver him
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 14
كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
Not at all! Surely it is a fierce Blaze
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 15
نَزَّاعَةٗ لِّلشَّوَىٰ
Constantly plucking forth the scalps
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 16
تَدۡعُواْ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
Calling him who withdrew and turned away
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 17
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰٓ
And (who) gathered (riches); (so he) prudently kept them
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 18
۞إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
Surely man was created most fretful
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 19
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعٗا
When evil touches him, (he is) most impatient
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 20
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوعًا
And when charity touches him, (he is) a constant preventer of it
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 21
إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
Except the ones who are (constantly) praying
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 22
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُونَ
They are the ones who are permanently preserving their prayers
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 23
وَٱلَّذِينَ فِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ
And (they) are the ones in whose riches is a truthful (duty) known
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 24
لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ
For the beggar and the dispossessed
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 25
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
And the ones who sincerely (believe) in the Day of Doom
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 26
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ
And they are the ones who are timorous of the torment of their Lord
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 27
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَيۡرُ مَأۡمُونٖ
Surely the torment of their Lord (leaves) none secure (Literally: other than to be secure)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 28
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَٰفِظُونَ
And they are the ones who preserve their private parts
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 29
إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَيۡرُ مَلُومِينَ
Except with their spouses or what their right hands possess; then surely they are not blameworthy (Literally: other than being blameworthy)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 30
فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ
Yet, whoever inequitably seeks (anything) beyond that, then those are the ones who are the aggressors
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 31
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَٰعُونَ
And they (The thought continues from verse 29) are the ones who pay heed (i.e., rightly observe) to their deposits and their covenant
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 32
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمۡ قَآئِمُونَ
And they are the ones who keep up their testimonies
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 33
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ يُحَافِظُونَ
And they are the ones who (strictly) preserve their prayer
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 34
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ مُّكۡرَمُونَ
Those will be in Gardens, high-honored
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 35
فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِينَ
So, for what (reason) are the ones who have disbelieved (hurrying with heads) protruding, facing you
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 36
عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
On the right and on the left in sundry batches
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 37
أَيَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٖ
Does every person of them long to be made to enter a Garden of Bliss
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 38
كَلَّآۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ
Not at all! Surely We created them of what they know
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 39
فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ
Yet no, I swear by The Lord of the easts and the wests; surely We are indeed (the) Determiners
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 40
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ
To exchange a more charitable (i.e., better) (people) instead of them, and in no way will We ever be outstripped
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 41
فَذَرۡهُمۡ يَخُوضُواْ وَيَلۡعَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
So leave them out to wade (Or: be engrossed "in vain talk") and play until they meet the Day of theirs which they are promised
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 42
يَوۡمَ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعٗا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٖ يُوفِضُونَ
The Day they will go out of the graves swiftly, as if they were rushing to a standard
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 43
خَٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٞۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ
Submissive will be their be holdings (i.e., gazes).They will be oppressed by humbleness. That is the Day which they were promised
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 44
