Surah Al-Maarij - English Translation by Mir Aneesuddin
سَأَلَ سَآئِلُۢ بِعَذَابٖ وَاقِعٖ
A questioner asked about the punishment to fall
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 1
لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ لَيۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٞ
For the disbelievers, there will be no defender for it
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 2
مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِي ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ
(It will be) from God, Possessor of the ways of ascent
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 3
تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيۡهِ فِي يَوۡمٖ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِينَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٖ
The angels and the spirit ascend to Him, in a day (period), the measure of which is fifty thousand years
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 4
فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرٗا جَمِيلًا
So be patient with the patience that is good
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 5
إِنَّهُمۡ يَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِيدٗا
They certainly see it far
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 6
وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبٗا
while We see it near
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 7
يَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ
The day when the sky will become like molten brass
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 8
وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ
and the mountains will be like coloured wool
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 9
وَلَا يَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمٗا
and (even) an intimate friend will not inquire from another intimate friend
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 10
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ يَفۡتَدِي مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمِئِذِۭ بِبَنِيهِ
(though) they will be made to see each other. The criminal would love to ransom himself from the punishment of that day by (sacrificing even) his sons
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 11
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ
and his wife and his brother
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 12
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِي تُـٔۡوِيهِ
and his family which gave him shelter
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 13
وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِيعٗا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
and whosoever is in the earth, all, (and) then save himself
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 14
كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
By no means ! it is certainly a flaming fire
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 15
نَزَّاعَةٗ لِّلشَّوَىٰ
taking off the skin
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 16
تَدۡعُواْ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
It will invite him who turned back (from the truth) and went away
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 17
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰٓ
and amassed (wealth) then withheld (it)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 18
۞إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
Man is certainly hasty (by) character
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 19
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعٗا
when evil afflicts him he is impatient
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 20
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوعًا
and when good (even) touches him (he) is niggardly
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 21
إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
except the worshippers (those who offer salat)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 22
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُونَ
who are constant at their worship (salat)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 23
وَٱلَّذِينَ فِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ
and in whose wealth there is a known (portion as the) right
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 24
لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ
of one who asks and of one who is deprived (yet does not ask)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 25
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
and those who accept the truth of the day of judgment
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 26
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ
and those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 27
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَيۡرُ مَأۡمُونٖ
the punishment of their Lord is certainly (something from which) one should not feel secure
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 28
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَٰفِظُونَ
and those who guard their private parts
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 29
إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَيۡرُ مَلُومِينَ
except from their wives or whom their right hands possess, so in their case they are not to be blamed
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 30
فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ
but whoever seeks (something) beyond that, then those are the persons who are transgressors
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 31
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَٰعُونَ
and those who are faithful to their trusts and their agreements
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 32
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمۡ قَآئِمُونَ
and those who stand firm on their testimonies
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 33
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ يُحَافِظُونَ
and those who are custodians of their worship (salat)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 34
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ مُّكۡرَمُونَ
They will be honoured in gardens
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 35
فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِينَ
So what is the matter with those who do not believe that they rush towards you
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 36
عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
from your right and from your left, in groups
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 37
أَيَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٖ
Does every man among them hope that he will be made to enter the garden of bliss
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 38
كَلَّآۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ
By no means ! they know (the thing) from which We created them
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 39
فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ
So I do swear by the Lord of the rising places/times and setting places/times (of the sun), that We are certainly able
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 40
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ
to replace (them by others) better than them and We are not to be overcome
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 41
فَذَرۡهُمۡ يَخُوضُواْ وَيَلۡعَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
So leave them involved in idle talk and play, till they meet their day which they are promised
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 42
يَوۡمَ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعٗا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٖ يُوفِضُونَ
The day they will come out from their graves in haste, as if rushing towards a goal
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 43
خَٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٞۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ
(with) their eyes humbled, disgrace covering them, that is the day which they were promised
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 44
