Surah Al-Maarij - English Translation by Tbirving
سَأَلَ سَآئِلُۢ بِعَذَابٖ وَاقِعٖ
A skeptic was asking about torment that is bound to happen
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 1
لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ لَيۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٞ
to disbelievers; there will be no defense against it
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 2
مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِي ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ
[since it comes] from God Who owns the staircases leading upward
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 3
تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيۡهِ فِي يَوۡمٖ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِينَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٖ
The angels and the Spirit will climb up to Him on a day whose range is fifty thousand years
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 4
فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرٗا جَمِيلًا
So act patient with a handsome patience
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 5
إِنَّهُمۡ يَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِيدٗا
They consider it is far away
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 6
وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبٗا
while We see it as nearby
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 7
يَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ
on a day when the sky will be like molten brass
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 8
وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ
and the mountains like tufts of yarn
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 9
وَلَا يَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمٗا
No close friend will question any [other] friend
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 10
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ يَفۡتَدِي مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمِئِذِۭ بِبَنِيهِ
they will merely give each other a knowing look. A criminal might like to ransom himself from that day´s torment through his children
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 11
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ
his wife, a brother of his
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 12
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِي تُـٔۡوِيهِ
his family circle which has sheltered him
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 13
وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِيعٗا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
and everyone who is on earth if [such action] might then save him
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 14
كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
Of course not; it would flare up
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 15
نَزَّاعَةٗ لِّلشَّوَىٰ
tugging at his scalp
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 16
تَدۡعُواْ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
claiming anyone who tries to escape and turns away
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 17
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰٓ
through saving (things) up and hoarding (them)
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 18
۞إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
Man has been created restless
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 19
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعٗا
so he panics whenever any evil touches him
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 20
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوعًا
and withdraws when some good touches him
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 21
إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
except for the prayerful
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 22
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُونَ
who are constant at their prayers
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 23
وَٱلَّذِينَ فِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ
and whose wealth comprises an acknowledged responsibility
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 24
لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ
towards the beggar and the destitute
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 25
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
and the ones who accept the Day for Repayment
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 26
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ
and those who are apprehensive about their Lord´s torment
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 27
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَيۡرُ مَأۡمُونٖ
their Lord´s torment is nothing to feel too safe from
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 28
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَٰفِظُونَ
and the ones who preserve their chastity
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 29
إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَيۡرُ مَلُومِينَ
except with their own spouses or those living under their control; with such they are blameless
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 30
فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ
Those who desire [to go] beyond that, will be going too far
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 31
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَٰعُونَ
and the ones who preserve their trusts and oaths
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 32
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمۡ قَآئِمُونَ
and the ones who stand by their testimony
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 33
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ يُحَافِظُونَ
and the ones who attend to their prayer
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 34
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ مُّكۡرَمُونَ
those will be honored in gardens
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 35
فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِينَ
Yet what is wrong with those who disbelieve, that they should try to dash on ahead of you
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 36
عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
in batches to the right and on the left
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 37
أَيَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٖ
Does every man among them aspire to enter the Garden of Bliss
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 38
كَلَّآۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ
Of course not! We created them out of something they well know
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 39
فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ
And I do swear by the Lord of the Eastern places and the Western places that We are Able
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 40
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ
to replace them with someone better than they are. We shall never be overruled
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 41
فَذَرۡهُمۡ يَخُوضُواْ وَيَلۡعَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
Leave them speculating and playing around until they face their day which they have been promised
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 42
يَوۡمَ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعٗا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٖ يُوفِضُونَ
the day when they will hasten forth from their graves as if they were rushing towards some objective
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 43
خَٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٞۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ
their eyesight cast down, disgrace overshadowing them on that day which they have been threatened with
Surah Al-Maarij, Verse 44
