Surah Nooh - English Translation by John Medows Rodwell
إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦٓ أَنۡ أَنذِرۡ قَوۡمَكَ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن يَأۡتِيَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٞ
We sent NOAH to his people, and said to him, "Warn thou thy people ere there come on them an afflictive punishment
Surah Nooh, Verse 1
قَالَ يَٰقَوۡمِ إِنِّي لَكُمۡ نَذِيرٞ مُّبِينٌ
He said, "O my people! I come to you a plain-spoken warner
Surah Nooh, Verse 2
أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ
Serve God and fear Him, and obey me
Surah Nooh, Verse 3
يَغۡفِرۡ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمۡ وَيُؤَخِّرۡكُمۡ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٖ مُّسَمًّىۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا جَآءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُۚ لَوۡ كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ
Your sins will He forgive you, and respite you till the fixed Time; for when God's fixed Time hath come, it shall not be put back. Would that ye knew this
Surah Nooh, Verse 4
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوۡتُ قَوۡمِي لَيۡلٗا وَنَهَارٗا
He said, "Lord I have cried to my people night and day
Surah Nooh, Verse 5
فَلَمۡ يَزِدۡهُمۡ دُعَآءِيٓ إِلَّا فِرَارٗا
and my cry doth but make them flee from me the more
Surah Nooh, Verse 6
وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ لِتَغۡفِرَ لَهُمۡ جَعَلُوٓاْ أَصَٰبِعَهُمۡ فِيٓ ءَاذَانِهِمۡ وَٱسۡتَغۡشَوۡاْ ثِيَابَهُمۡ وَأَصَرُّواْ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ ٱسۡتِكۡبَارٗا
So oft as I cry to them, that thou mayest forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, and wrap themselves in their garments, and persist in their error, and are disdainfully disdainful
Surah Nooh, Verse 7
ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ جِهَارٗا
Then I cried aloud to them
Surah Nooh, Verse 8
ثُمَّ إِنِّيٓ أَعۡلَنتُ لَهُمۡ وَأَسۡرَرۡتُ لَهُمۡ إِسۡرَارٗا
Then again spake I with plainness, and in private did I secretly address them
Surah Nooh, Verse 9
فَقُلۡتُ ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارٗا
And I said, Beg forgiveness of your Lord, for He is ready to forgive
Surah Nooh, Verse 10
يُرۡسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡكُم مِّدۡرَارٗا
He will send down the very Heaven upon you in plenteous rains
Surah Nooh, Verse 11
وَيُمۡدِدۡكُم بِأَمۡوَٰلٖ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ جَنَّـٰتٖ وَيَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ أَنۡهَٰرٗا
And will increase you in wealth and children; and will give you gardens, and will give you watercourses
Surah Nooh, Verse 12
مَّا لَكُمۡ لَا تَرۡجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارٗا
What hath come to you that ye hope not for goodness from the hand of God
Surah Nooh, Verse 13
وَقَدۡ خَلَقَكُمۡ أَطۡوَارًا
For He it is who hath formed you by successive steps
Surah Nooh, Verse 14
أَلَمۡ تَرَوۡاْ كَيۡفَ خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ سَبۡعَ سَمَٰوَٰتٖ طِبَاقٗا
See ye not how God hath created the seven heavens one over the other
Surah Nooh, Verse 15
وَجَعَلَ ٱلۡقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورٗا وَجَعَلَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ سِرَاجٗا
And He hath placed therein the moon as a light, and hath placed there the sun as a torch
Surah Nooh, Verse 16
وَٱللَّهُ أَنۢبَتَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ نَبَاتٗا
And God hath caused you to spring forth from the earth like a plant
Surah Nooh, Verse 17
ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمۡ فِيهَا وَيُخۡرِجُكُمۡ إِخۡرَاجٗا
Hereafter will He turn you back into it again, and will bring you forth anew
Surah Nooh, Verse 18
وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِسَاطٗا
And God hath spread the earth for you like a carpet
Surah Nooh, Verse 19
لِّتَسۡلُكُواْ مِنۡهَا سُبُلٗا فِجَاجٗا
That ye may walk therein along spacious paths
Surah Nooh, Verse 20
قَالَ نُوحٞ رَّبِّ إِنَّهُمۡ عَصَوۡنِي وَٱتَّبَعُواْ مَن لَّمۡ يَزِدۡهُ مَالُهُۥ وَوَلَدُهُۥٓ إِلَّا خَسَارٗا
Said Noah, "O my Lord! they rebel against me, and they follow those whose riches and children do but aggravate their ruin
Surah Nooh, Verse 21
وَمَكَرُواْ مَكۡرٗا كُبَّارٗا
And they plotted a great plot
Surah Nooh, Verse 22
وَقَالُواْ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمۡ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدّٗا وَلَا سُوَاعٗا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسۡرٗا
And they said, "Forsake not your gods; forsake not Wadd nor Sowah, Nor Yaghuth and Yahuk and Nesr
Surah Nooh, Verse 23
وَقَدۡ أَضَلُّواْ كَثِيرٗاۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَٰلٗا
And they caused many to err; - and thou, too, O Muhammad! shalt be the means of increasing only error in the wicked
Surah Nooh, Verse 24
مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٰٔتِهِمۡ أُغۡرِقُواْ فَأُدۡخِلُواْ نَارٗا فَلَمۡ يَجِدُواْ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَنصَارٗا
Because of their sins they were drowned, and made to go into the Fire; And they found that they had no helper save God
Surah Nooh, Verse 25
وَقَالَ نُوحٞ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرۡ عَلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِنَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ دَيَّارًا
And Noah said, "Lord, leave not one single family of Infidels on the Earth
Surah Nooh, Verse 26
إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرۡهُمۡ يُضِلُّواْ عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوٓاْ إِلَّا فَاجِرٗا كَفَّارٗا
For if thou leave them they will beguile thy servants and will beget only sinners, infidels
Surah Nooh, Verse 27
رَّبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَلِوَٰلِدَيَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيۡتِيَ مُؤۡمِنٗا وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارَۢا
O my Lord, forgive me, and my parents, and every one who, being a believer, shall enter my house, and believers men and women: and add to the wicked nought but perdition
Surah Nooh, Verse 28
