Surah Ash-Shams - English Translation by Dr Munir Munshey

وَٱلشَّمۡسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا

(I swear) by the sun and its radiant light
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 1

وَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا

And the moon that trails (and reflects) its light
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 2

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا

By the day that reveals (the sun)
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 3

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَغۡشَىٰهَا

And the night that veils it
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 4

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا

(I swear) by the sky, and (by) Him Who made it
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 5

وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا

And (by) the earth, and (by) Him Who spread it
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 6

وَنَفۡسٖ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا

By the soul, and by Him Who perfected it
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 7

فَأَلۡهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقۡوَىٰهَا

Then, inspired in it the (conscience, the sense of) wrong and right
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 8

قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا

Successful is the one, who (nurtured and) purified (his soul)
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 9

وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا

A (dismal) failure is the one who (suppressed and) debased (his soul)
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 10

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ بِطَغۡوَىٰهَآ

The (people of) ´Samood´ denied (the truth) with utter arrogance
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 11

إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشۡقَىٰهَا

The meanest among them was dispatched
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 12

فَقَالَ لَهُمۡ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقۡيَٰهَا

(Against) the messenger of Allah (who) warned them saying, "(Do not attack) this camel of Allah; let it (roam and) drink (freely)
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 13

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمۡدَمَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمۡ فَسَوَّىٰهَا

But they refused, and slashed its hamstring. Therefore, as a consequence of their sins, their Lord destroyed them completely; He totally demolished their dwellings
