Surah Ash-Shams - English Translation by Muhammad Sarwar
وَٱلشَّمۡسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا
By the sun and its noon-time brightness
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 1
وَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا
by the moon when it follows the sun
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 2
وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا
by the day when it brightens the earth
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 3
وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَغۡشَىٰهَا
by the night when it covers the earth with darkness
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 4
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا
by the heavens and that (Power) which established them
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 5
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا
by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 6
وَنَفۡسٖ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا
and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 7
فَأَلۡهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقۡوَىٰهَا
and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 8
قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا
those who purify their souls will certainly have everlasting happiness
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 9
وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا
and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness)
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 10
كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ بِطَغۡوَىٰهَآ
The people of Thamud rejected (the truth) as a result of their rebelliousness
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 11
إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشۡقَىٰهَا
when the most corrupt of them incited them (to commit evil)
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 12
فَقَالَ لَهُمۡ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقۡيَٰهَا
The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 13
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمۡدَمَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمۡ فَسَوَّىٰهَا
However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 14
وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقۡبَٰهَا
God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed
Surah Ash-Shams, Verse 15
