Surah Ar-Rahman - English Translation by Muhammad Mahmoud Ghali
ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ
The All-Merciful
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 1
عَلَّمَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ
He taught the Qur'an
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 2
خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ
He created man
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 3
عَلَّمَهُ ٱلۡبَيَانَ
He has taught him distinct (Literally: evident (demonstration) (speech)
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 4
ٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ بِحُسۡبَانٖ
The sun and the moon (run) to all-precisely reckoned (courses)
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 5
وَٱلنَّجۡمُ وَٱلشَّجَرُ يَسۡجُدَانِ
And the star and the trees prostrate themselves
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 6
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ ٱلۡمِيزَانَ
And the heaven, He raised it up, and laid down the Balance
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 7
أَلَّا تَطۡغَوۡاْ فِي ٱلۡمِيزَانِ
That you should not be inordinate in the Balance
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 8
وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلۡوَزۡنَ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ وَلَا تُخۡسِرُواْ ٱلۡمِيزَانَ
And keep up the weight with equity, and do not cause loss in the Balance
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 9
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَضَعَهَا لِلۡأَنَامِ
And the earth, He laid down for (all) beings
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 10
فِيهَا فَٰكِهَةٞ وَٱلنَّخۡلُ ذَاتُ ٱلۡأَكۡمَامِ
Therein are fruits, and palm-trees comprising sheaths
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 11
وَٱلۡحَبُّ ذُو ٱلۡعَصۡفِ وَٱلرَّيۡحَانُ
And grains owning the blades, (Or: husks) and all-fragrant herbs. (Or: soothing comfort)
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 12
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) (i.e., the jinn and mankind) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 13
خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِن صَلۡصَٰلٖ كَٱلۡفَخَّارِ
He created man of dry clay like earthenware
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 14
وَخَلَقَ ٱلۡجَآنَّ مِن مَّارِجٖ مِّن نَّارٖ
And He created the jinn (race) of a merging of fire
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 15
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 16
رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقَيۡنِ وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَغۡرِبَيۡنِ
The Lord of the two easts and The Lord of the two wests
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 17
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 18
مَرَجَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَيۡنِ يَلۡتَقِيَانِ
He merged the two seas (that) meet together
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 19
بَيۡنَهُمَا بَرۡزَخٞ لَّا يَبۡغِيَانِ
Between them (both) is an isthmus (i.e., an obstruction) (which) they do not overpass. (Literally: none of them is inequitable)
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 20
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 21
يَخۡرُجُ مِنۡهُمَا ٱللُّؤۡلُؤُ وَٱلۡمَرۡجَانُ
From (both of) them come out (Literally: go out) the pearl and all-merged coral (stones)
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 22
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 23
وَلَهُ ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡمُنشَـَٔاتُ فِي ٱلۡبَحۡرِ كَٱلۡأَعۡلَٰمِ
And to Him belong the running (ships), (sailing) aloft (Literally: raised up, erected) in the sea like landmarks
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 24
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 25
كُلُّ مَنۡ عَلَيۡهَا فَانٖ
All that (exists) upon it (i.e., the earth) is vanishing
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 26
وَيَبۡقَىٰ وَجۡهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو ٱلۡجَلَٰلِ وَٱلۡإِكۡرَامِ
And there (still) remains (forever) The Face of your Lord, The Owner of Majesty and Munificence
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 27
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 28
يَسۡـَٔلُهُۥ مَن فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ كُلَّ يَوۡمٍ هُوَ فِي شَأۡنٖ
Whoever are in the heavens and the earth ask Him; every Day He is upon some (momentous) affair
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 29
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 30
سَنَفۡرُغُ لَكُمۡ أَيُّهَ ٱلثَّقَلَانِ
We will soon finish your (affair), O you (both) overburdened (Or: discomforted) ones! (i.e., the jinn and humankind (see verse)
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 31
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 32
يَٰمَعۡشَرَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِ إِنِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُمۡ أَن تَنفُذُواْ مِنۡ أَقۡطَارِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنفُذُواْۚ لَا تَنفُذُونَ إِلَّا بِسُلۡطَٰنٖ
O company of the jinn and humankind, in case you are able to penetrate through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then penetrate (them)! You will not penetrate except with an all-binding authority
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 33
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 34
يُرۡسَلُ عَلَيۡكُمَا شُوَاظٞ مِّن نَّارٖ وَنُحَاسٞ فَلَا تَنتَصِرَانِ
Against you (both) will be sent flares of fire, and (molten) brass; then you will not vindicate yourselves
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 35
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 36
فَإِذَا ٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتۡ وَرۡدَةٗ كَٱلدِّهَانِ
Then, when the heaven is cloven so it becomes rosy-like ointment
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 37
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 38
فَيَوۡمَئِذٖ لَّا يُسۡـَٔلُ عَن ذَنۢبِهِۦٓ إِنسٞ وَلَا جَآنّٞ
Then upon that Day neither any of humankind nor any of the jinn (race) will be questioned about his guilty deed
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 39
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 40
يُعۡرَفُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ بِسِيمَٰهُمۡ فَيُؤۡخَذُ بِٱلنَّوَٰصِي وَٱلۡأَقۡدَامِ
The criminals will be recognized by their marks, and (they) will be taken (away) by (their) forelocks and (their) feet
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 41
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 42
هَٰذِهِۦ جَهَنَّمُ ٱلَّتِي يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ
This is Hell to which criminals cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 43
يَطُوفُونَ بَيۡنَهَا وَبَيۡنَ حَمِيمٍ ءَانٖ
They go round between it and between duly boiling (Or: hot) scalding water
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 44
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 45
وَلِمَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ جَنَّتَانِ
And for him who fears the Station of his Lord there are two Gardens
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 46
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 47
ذَوَاتَآ أَفۡنَانٖ
(Both) comprising (different) species (of trees)
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 48
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 49
فِيهِمَا عَيۡنَانِ تَجۡرِيَانِ
In (both of) them are two springs running
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 50
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 51
فِيهِمَا مِن كُلِّ فَٰكِهَةٖ زَوۡجَانِ
In (both of) them are two pairs of every fruit
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 52
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 53
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ فُرُشِۭ بَطَآئِنُهَا مِنۡ إِسۡتَبۡرَقٖۚ وَجَنَى ٱلۡجَنَّتَيۡنِ دَانٖ
Reclining upon beddings, the linings of which are of brocade, and the reapings of the two gardens are within reach
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 54
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 55
فِيهِنَّ قَٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ إِنسٞ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنّٞ
Therein are (maidens) restraining their glances whom neither humankind nor the jinn (race) have deflowered before them
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 56
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 57
كَأَنَّهُنَّ ٱلۡيَاقُوتُ وَٱلۡمَرۡجَانُ
As if they were the rubies and the all-merged coral (stones)
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 58
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 59
هَلۡ جَزَآءُ ٱلۡإِحۡسَٰنِ إِلَّا ٱلۡإِحۡسَٰنُ
Should the recompense of fairness be (anything) except fairness
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 60
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 61
وَمِن دُونِهِمَا جَنَّتَانِ
And lesser (Or: besides) than these two are two gardens
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 62
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 63
مُدۡهَآمَّتَانِ
Both of dark green tincture
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 64
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 65
فِيهِمَا عَيۡنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ
In both of them are two spurting springs
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 66
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 67
فِيهِمَا فَٰكِهَةٞ وَنَخۡلٞ وَرُمَّانٞ
In both of them are fruits, and palm-trees and pomegranates
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 68
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 69
فِيهِنَّ خَيۡرَٰتٌ حِسَانٞ
In them are the most charitalsle (i.e., best; choicest) and fairest of maidens
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 70
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 71
حُورٞ مَّقۡصُورَٰتٞ فِي ٱلۡخِيَامِ
Huris, cloistered in pavilions
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 72
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 73
لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ إِنسٞ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنّٞ
Whom neither humankind nor the jinn (race) have deflowered before them
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 74
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 75
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ رَفۡرَفٍ خُضۡرٖ وَعَبۡقَرِيٍّ حِسَانٖ
Reclining upon green pillows and the fairest carpets
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 76
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Then to whichever of your Lord's boons do you (both) cry lies
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 77
تَبَٰرَكَ ٱسۡمُ رَبِّكَ ذِي ٱلۡجَلَٰلِ وَٱلۡإِكۡرَامِ
Supremely Blessed is the Name of your Lord, The Owner of (Highest) Majesty and (Highest) Munificence
Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 78
