Surah Al-Alaq - English Translation by Ali Unal
ٱقۡرَأۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ
Read in and with the Name of your Lord, Who has created –
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 1
خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِنۡ عَلَقٍ
Created human from a clot clinging (to the wall of the womb)
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 2
ٱقۡرَأۡ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلۡأَكۡرَمُ
Read, and your Lord is the All-Munificent
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 3
ٱلَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِٱلۡقَلَمِ
Who has taught (human) by the pen –
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 4
عَلَّمَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمۡ يَعۡلَمۡ
Taught human what he did not know
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 5
كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطۡغَىٰٓ
No indeed, but (despite all His favors to him), human is unruly and rebels
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 6
أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰٓ
In that he sees himself as self-sufficient, independent (of his Lord)
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 7
إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجۡعَىٰٓ
But to your Lord surely is the return (when everyone will account for their life)
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 8
أَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي يَنۡهَىٰ
Have you considered the one who would impede and forbid
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 9
عَبۡدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ
A servant (of God) when he prays
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 10
أَرَءَيۡتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ
Have you considered if he is (and surely he is) on the right way
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 11
أَوۡ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقۡوَىٰٓ
Or exhorts others to righteousness and piety
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 12
أَرَءَيۡتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
Have you considered if he himself denies the truth and turns away (from it)
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 13
أَلَمۡ يَعۡلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ
Does he (who would impede the servant in his Prayer) not know that God sees (all that people do)
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 14
كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمۡ يَنتَهِ لَنَسۡفَعَۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ
No indeed! If he does not desist, We will certainly seize and drag him by the forelock
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 15
نَاصِيَةٖ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٖ
A lying, sinful forelock
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 16
فَلۡيَدۡعُ نَادِيَهُۥ
Then let him summon (to his help his) council
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 17
سَنَدۡعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ
We will summon the guards of Hell
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 18
كَلَّا لَا تُطِعۡهُ وَٱسۡجُدۡۤ وَٱقۡتَرِب۩
By no means! Pay no heed to him (in his attempt to prevent the Prayer), but prostrate and draw near (to God)
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 19
