Surah Al-Alaq - English Translation by Muhammad Asad
ٱقۡرَأۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ
READ in the name of thy Sustainer, who has
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 1
خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِنۡ عَلَقٍ
created man out of a germ-cell
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 2
ٱقۡرَأۡ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلۡأَكۡرَمُ
Read - for thy Sustainer is the Most Bountiful One
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 3
ٱلَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِٱلۡقَلَمِ
who has taught [man] the use of the pen –
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 4
عَلَّمَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمۡ يَعۡلَمۡ
taught man what he did not know
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 5
كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطۡغَىٰٓ
Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 6
أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰٓ
whenever he believes himself to be self-sufficient
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 7
إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجۡعَىٰٓ
for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 8
أَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي يَنۡهَىٰ
HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 9
عَبۡدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ
a servant [of God] from praying
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 10
أَرَءَيۡتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ
Hast thou considered whether he is on the right way
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 11
أَوۡ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقۡوَىٰٓ
or is concerned with God-consciousness
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 12
أَرَءَيۡتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
Hast thou considered whether he may [not] be giving the lie to the truth and turning his back [upon it]
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 13
أَلَمۡ يَعۡلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ
Does he, then, not know that God sees [all]
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 14
كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمۡ يَنتَهِ لَنَسۡفَعَۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ
Nay, if he desist not, We shall most surely drag him down upon his forehead
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 15
نَاصِيَةٖ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٖ
the lying, rebellious forehead! –
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 16
فَلۡيَدۡعُ نَادِيَهُۥ
and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 17
سَنَدۡعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ
[the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 18
كَلَّا لَا تُطِعۡهُ وَٱسۡجُدۡۤ وَٱقۡتَرِب۩
Nay, pay thou no heed to him, but prostrate thyself [before God] and draw close [unto Him]
Surah Al-Alaq, Verse 19
