Surah Al-Qiyama - English Translation by George Sale
لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ
Verily I swear by the day of resurrection
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 1
وَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلنَّفۡسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ
and I swear by the soul which accuseth itself
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 2
أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَلَّن نَّجۡمَعَ عِظَامَهُۥ
Doth man think that We will not gather his bones together
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 3
بَلَىٰ قَٰدِرِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُۥ
Yea: We are able to put together the smallest bones of his fingers
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 4
بَلۡ يُرِيدُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ لِيَفۡجُرَ أَمَامَهُۥ
But man chooseth to be wicked, for the time which is before him
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 5
يَسۡـَٔلُ أَيَّانَ يَوۡمُ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ
He asketh, when will the day of resurrection be
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 6
فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ
But when the sight shall be dazzled
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 7
وَخَسَفَ ٱلۡقَمَرُ
and the moon shall be eclipsed
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 8
وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ
and the sun and the moon shall be in conjunction
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 9
يَقُولُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ يَوۡمَئِذٍ أَيۡنَ ٱلۡمَفَرُّ
on that day man shall say, where is a place of refuge
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 10
كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ
By no means: There shall be no place to fly unto
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 11
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقَرُّ
With thy Lord shall be the sure mansion of rest on that day
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 12
يُنَبَّؤُاْ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ يَوۡمَئِذِۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ
On that day shall a man be told that which he hath done first and last
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 13
بَلِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٞ
Yea; a man shall be an evidence against himself
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 14
وَلَوۡ أَلۡقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ
And though he offer his excuses, they shall not be received
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 15
لَا تُحَرِّكۡ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعۡجَلَ بِهِۦٓ
Move not thy tongue, O Mohammed, in repeating the revelations brought thee by Gabriel, before he shall have finished the same, that thou mayest quickly commit them to memory
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 16
إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا جَمۡعَهُۥ وَقُرۡءَانَهُۥ
For the collecting the Koran in thy mind, and the teaching thee the true reading thereof are incumbent on Us
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 17
فَإِذَا قَرَأۡنَٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعۡ قُرۡءَانَهُۥ
But when We shall have read the same unto thee by the tongue of the angel, do thou follow the reading thereof
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 18
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا بَيَانَهُۥ
And afterwards it shall be our part to explain it unto thee
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 19
كَلَّا بَلۡ تُحِبُّونَ ٱلۡعَاجِلَةَ
By no means shalt thou be thus hasty for the future. But ye love that which hasteneth away
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 20
وَتَذَرُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ
and neglect the life to come
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 21
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ نَّاضِرَةٌ
Some countenances, on that day, shall be bright
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 22
إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٞ
looking towards their Lord
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 23
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذِۭ بَاسِرَةٞ
and some countenances, on that day, shall be dismal
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 24
تَظُنُّ أَن يُفۡعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٞ
They shall think that a crushing calamity shall be brought upon them
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 25
كَلَّآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِيَ
Assuredly. When a man's soul shall come up to his throat, in his last agony
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 26
وَقِيلَ مَنۡۜ رَاقٖ
and the standers-by shall say, who bringeth a charm to recover him
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 27
وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡفِرَاقُ
And shall think it to be his departure out of this world
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 28
وَٱلۡتَفَّتِ ٱلسَّاقُ بِٱلسَّاقِ
and one leg shall be joined with the other leg
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 29
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ٱلۡمَسَاقُ
On that day unto thy Lord shall he be driven
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 30
فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ
For he believed not, neither did he pray
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 31
وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
but he accused God's apostle of imposture, and turned back from obeying him
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 32
ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ
Then he departed unto his family, walking with a haughty mien
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 33
أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰ
Wherefore, woe be unto thee; woe
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 34
ثُمَّ أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰٓ
And again, woe be unto thee; woe
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 35
أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَن يُتۡرَكَ سُدًى
Doth man think that he shall be left at full liberty, without control
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 36
أَلَمۡ يَكُ نُطۡفَةٗ مِّن مَّنِيّٖ يُمۡنَىٰ
Was he not a drop of seed, which was emitted
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 37
ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةٗ فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ
Afterwards he became a little coagulated blood; and God formed him, and fashioned him with just proportion
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 38
فَجَعَلَ مِنۡهُ ٱلزَّوۡجَيۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰٓ
And made of him two sexes, the male and the female
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 39
أَلَيۡسَ ذَٰلِكَ بِقَٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يُحۡـِۧيَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ
Is not he who hath done this able to quicken the dead
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 40
