Surah Al-Qiyama - English Translation by Muhammad Asad
لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ
NAY! I call to witness the Day of Resurrection
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 1
وَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلنَّفۡسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ
But nay! I call to witness the accusing voice of man's own conscience
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 2
أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَلَّن نَّجۡمَعَ عِظَامَهُۥ
Does man think that We cannot [resurrect him and] bring his bones together again
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 3
بَلَىٰ قَٰدِرِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُۥ
Yea indeed, We are able to make whole his very finger-tips
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 4
بَلۡ يُرِيدُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ لِيَفۡجُرَ أَمَامَهُۥ
None the less man chooses to deny what lies ahead of him
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 5
يَسۡـَٔلُ أَيَّانَ يَوۡمُ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ
asking [derisively], "When is that Resurrection Day to be
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 6
فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ
But [on that Day,] when the eyesight is by fear confounded
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 7
وَخَسَفَ ٱلۡقَمَرُ
and the moon is darkened
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 8
وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ
and the sun and the moon are brought together
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 9
يَقُولُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ يَوۡمَئِذٍ أَيۡنَ ٱلۡمَفَرُّ
on that Day will man exclaim "Whither to flee
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 10
كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ
But nay: no refuge [for thee, O man]
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 11
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقَرُّ
With thy Sustainer, on that Day, the journey's end will be
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 12
يُنَبَّؤُاْ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ يَوۡمَئِذِۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ
Man will be apprised, on that Day, of what he has done and what he has left undone
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 13
بَلِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٞ
nay, but man shall against himself be an eye-witness
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 14
وَلَوۡ أَلۡقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ
even though he may veil himself in excuses
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 15
لَا تُحَرِّكۡ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعۡجَلَ بِهِۦٓ
MOVE NOT thy tongue in haste, [repeating the words of the revelation]
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 16
إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا جَمۡعَهُۥ وَقُرۡءَانَهُۥ
for, behold, it is for Us to gather it [in thy heart,] and to cause it to be read [as it ought to be read]
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 17
فَإِذَا قَرَأۡنَٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعۡ قُرۡءَانَهُۥ
Thus, when We recite it, follow thou its wording [with all thy mind]
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 18
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا بَيَانَهُۥ
and then, behold, it will be for Us to make its meaning clear
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 19
كَلَّا بَلۡ تُحِبُّونَ ٱلۡعَاجِلَةَ
NAY, but [most of] you love this fleeting life
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 20
وَتَذَرُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ
and give no thought to the life to come [and to Judgment Day]
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 21
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ نَّاضِرَةٌ
Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 22
إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٞ
looking up to their Sustainer
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 23
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذِۭ بَاسِرَةٞ
and some faces will on that Day be overcast with despair
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 24
تَظُنُّ أَن يُفۡعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٞ
knowing that a crushing calamity is about to befall them
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 25
كَلَّآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِيَ
NAY, but when [the last breath] comes up to the throat [of a dying man]
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 26
وَقِيلَ مَنۡۜ رَاقٖ
and people ask, "Is there any wizard [that could save him]
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 27
وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡفِرَاقُ
the while he [himself] knows that this is the parting
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 28
وَٱلۡتَفَّتِ ٱلسَّاقُ بِٱلسَّاقِ
and is enwrapped in the pangs of death
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 29
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ٱلۡمَسَاقُ
at that time towards thy Sustainer does he feel impelled to turn
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 30
فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ
Useless, though, will be his repentance: for [as long as he was alive] he did not accept the truth, nor did he pray [for enlightenment]
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 31
وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
but, on the contrary, he gave the lie to the truth and turned away [from it]
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 32
ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ
and then went arrogantly back to what he had come from
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 33
أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰ
[And yet, O man, thine end comes hourly] nearer unto thee, and nearer –
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 34
ثُمَّ أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰٓ
and ever nearer unto thee, and nearer
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 35
أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَن يُتۡرَكَ سُدًى
DOES MAN, then, think that he is to be left to himself to go about at will
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 36
أَلَمۡ يَكُ نُطۡفَةٗ مِّن مَّنِيّٖ يُمۡنَىٰ
Was he not once a [mere] drop of sperm that had been spilt
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 37
ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةٗ فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ
and thereafter became a germ-cell - whereupon He created and formed [it] in accordance with what [it] was meant to be
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 38
فَجَعَلَ مِنۡهُ ٱلزَّوۡجَيۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰٓ
and fashioned out of it the two sexes, the male and the female
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 39
أَلَيۡسَ ذَٰلِكَ بِقَٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يُحۡـِۧيَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ
Is not He, then; able to bring the dead back to life
Surah Al-Qiyama, Verse 40
