Surah Al-Mutaffifin - English Translation by Dr Laleh Bakhtiar
وَيۡلٞ لِّلۡمُطَفِّفِينَ
Woe be to the ones who give short measure
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 1
ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكۡتَالُواْ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسۡتَوۡفُونَ
those who when they measure against humanity obtained full measure
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 2
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمۡ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمۡ يُخۡسِرُونَ
Yet when they wanted to measure for them, or weigh for them, they skimp
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 3
أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبۡعُوثُونَ
Think those not that they will be ones who are raised up
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 4
لِيَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٖ
on the sublime Day
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 5
يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
a Day when humanity will stand up for the Lord of the worlds
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 6
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلۡفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٖ
No indeed! Truly, the Book of the ones who act immorally is in Sijjin
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 7
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٞ
And what will cause thee to recognize what Sijjin is
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 8
كِتَٰبٞ مَّرۡقُومٞ
It is a written book
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 9
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ
Woe on that Day to the ones who deny—
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 10
ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
those who deny the Day of Judgment
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 11
وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
And none denies it but every sinful, exceeder of limits
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 12
إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
who, when Our signs are recounted to him, he said: Fables of the ancient ones
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 13
كَلَّاۖ بَلۡۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ
No indeed! Nay! Their hearts will be overcome with rust from what they had been earning
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 14
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمۡ عَن رَّبِّهِمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لَّمَحۡجُوبُونَ
No indeed! They will be from their Lord on that Day ones who are alienated
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 15
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمۡ لَصَالُواْ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ
Truly, again, they will be ones who roast in hellfire
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 16
ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ
Again, it will be said to them after that: This is what you had been denying
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 17
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ
No indeed! Truly, the book of the pious is in Illiyyun
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 18
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ
And what will cause thee to recognize what Illiyyun is
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 19
كِتَٰبٞ مَّرۡقُومٞ
It is a written book
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 20
يَشۡهَدُهُ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ
Bearing witness to it are the ones who are brought near to God
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 21
إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ
Truly, the pious will be in bliss
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 22
عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
on raised benches, looking on
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 23
تَعۡرِفُ فِي وُجُوهِهِمۡ نَضۡرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
Thou wilt recognize on their faces the radiancy of bliss
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 24
يُسۡقَوۡنَ مِن رَّحِيقٖ مَّخۡتُومٍ
They will be given to drink sealed over exquisite wine
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 25
خِتَٰمُهُۥ مِسۡكٞۚ وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ فَلۡيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلۡمُتَنَٰفِسُونَ
Its seal will have the lingering smell of musk. So for that, then, the ones who strive, strive
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 26
وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسۡنِيمٍ
And the mixture will be of Tasnim
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 27
عَيۡنٗا يَشۡرَبُ بِهَا ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ
a spring from which will drink the ones who are brought near to it
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 28
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجۡرَمُواْ كَانُواْ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ يَضۡحَكُونَ
Truly, those who sinned—at those who believed—had been laughing
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 29
وَإِذَا مَرُّواْ بِهِمۡ يَتَغَامَزُونَ
And when they passed by them, they would wink at one another
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 30
وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓاْ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُواْ فَكِهِينَ
and when they would turn about to their people, they would turn about acting as ones who are unconcerned
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 31
وَإِذَا رَأَوۡهُمۡ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ
And when they saw them, they would say: Truly, these are ones who go astray
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 32
وَمَآ أُرۡسِلُواْ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَٰفِظِينَ
They were sent as ones who guard over them
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 33
فَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنَ ٱلۡكُفَّارِ يَضۡحَكُونَ
Then, on this Day, those who believed laugh at the ones who are ungrateful
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 34
عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
seated on raised benches, they look on
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 35
هَلۡ ثُوِّبَ ٱلۡكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُواْ يَفۡعَلُونَ
Were the ones who are ungrateful not rewarded for what they had been accomplishing
Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Verse 36
