Surah Al-Balad - English Translation by Abdul Hye
لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
I swear by this city (Makkah, where it is prohibited to harm anyone)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 1
وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
you (O Muhammad) are free (from sin to punish the enemies of Islam) in this city (Makkah)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 2
وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ
and by the father (Adam) and the children which he begot (mankind)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 3
لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ
surely, We have created human in toil (to work hard)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 4
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ
Does human think that none can overcome them
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 5
يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا
Human says (boastfully): “I have wasted wealth in abundance!”
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 6
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
Does human thinks that none sees them
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 7
أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ
Have We not made for them a pair of eyes (to see)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 8
وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ
And a tongue and a pair of lips (to control)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 9
وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ
And shown him the 2 ways (good and evil)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 10
فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ
Yet, human has not attempted to pass on the steep path (Aqabah)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 11
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ
And what will make you know what the steep path is
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 12
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
(It is) the freeing of a neck (slave from bondage)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 13
أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ
or giving food in a day of hunger (famine)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 14
يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ
to an orphan relative
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 15
أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ
or to a poor clinging to dust (out of misery)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 16
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ
then human should be one of those who believe, recommend one another to the patience, and recommend one another to kindness and compassion
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 17
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ
They are the people of the Right Hand (people of Paradise)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 18
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ
But those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand (people of hell)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 19
عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ
with the fire all around them
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 20
