Surah Al-Balad - English Translation by Muhammad Taqi Ud Din Al Hilali And Muhammad Muhsin Khan
لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
I swear by this city (Makkah)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 1
وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 2
وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ
And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 3
لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ
Verily, We have created man in toil
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 4
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ
Thinks he that none can overcome him
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 5
يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا
He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 6
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
Thinks he that none sees him
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 7
أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ
Have We not made for him a pair of eyes
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 8
وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ
And a tongue and a pair of lips
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 9
وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ
And shown him the two ways (good and evil)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 10
فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ
But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 11
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ
And what will make you know the path that is steep
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 12
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
(It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 13
أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ
Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 14
يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ
To an orphan near of kin
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 15
أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ
Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 16
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ
Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 17
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ
They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 18
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ
But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 19
عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ
The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet)
