Surah Al-Balad - English Translation by Mir Aneesuddin
لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
                  No, I do swear by this city (Mecca)                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 1
                
وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
                  and you are a dweller of this city                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 2
                
وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ
                  and by the begetter (father) and that which he begot (son)                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 3
                
لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ
                  We have indeed created man in hardship                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 4
                
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ
                  Does he think that no one will ever have power over him                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 5
                
يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا
                  He says, “I have destroyed plenty of wealth.”                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 6
                
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
                  Does he think that no one sees him                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 7
                
أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ
                  Did We not make for him two eyes                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 8
                
وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ
                  and a tongue and two lips                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 9
                
وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ
                  and show him the two high ways (of good and evil)                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 10
                
فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ
                  But he did not attempt the uphill (road)                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 11
                
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ
                  And what will make you realize what the uphill (road) is                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 12
                
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
                  Freeing a slave                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 13
                
أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ
                  or feeding during a period of hunger                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 14
                
يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ
                  an orphan having relationship                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 15
                
أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ
                  or the dusty poor                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 16
                
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ
                  then to be among those who believe and recommend to each other patience and recommend to each other compassion                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 17
                
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ
                  Those are the companions of the right hand (side)                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 18
                
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ
                  And those who do not believe in Our signs, they are the companions of the left hand (side)                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 19
                
عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ
                  Fire will be closed over them (enveloping them from all sides)                  
                  Surah Al-Balad, Verse 20
