Surah Al-Balad - English Translation by Ali Bakhtiari Nejad
لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
I swear by this land
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 1
وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
and you are a resident of this land
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 2
وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ
and by the father and what he fathered
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 3
لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ
that We have certainly created the human being in distress
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 4
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ
Does he think that no one will ever have power over him
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 5
يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا
He says: I wasted a lot of wealth
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 6
أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
Does he think that no one saw him
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 7
أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ
Did we not make two eyes for him
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 8
وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ
and a tongue and two lips
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 9
وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ
and We guided him to the two ways
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 10
فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ
But he did not take/attempt the winding mountain road
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 11
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ
And do you know what the winding mountain road is
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 12
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
(It is) freeing a slave
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 13
أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ
or in a day of famine, feeding
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 14
يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ
an orphan being related
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 15
أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ
or a poor person in ruins (and penniless)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 16
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ
then being of those who believed and recommend one another to the perseverance (and patience) and recommend one another to kindness
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 17
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ
They are associates of the right hand (the fortunate)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 18
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ
And those who disbelieved in Our signs, they are associates of the left hand (the unfortunate)
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 19
عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ
and a fire is closed over upon them
Surah Al-Balad, Verse 20
