Surah Al-Muddathir - English Translation by Dr Laleh Bakhtiar
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ
O thou, the one who wrapped himself in a cloak
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 1
قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ
Stand up and warn
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 2
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ
And magnify thy Lord
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 3
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ
and purify thy garments
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 4
وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ
and abandon contamination
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 5
وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ
And reproach not others to acquire more for yourself
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 6
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ
And for thy Lord, then, have thou patience
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 7
فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي ٱلنَّاقُورِ
Then, when the horn is sounded
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 8
فَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَوۡمٌ عَسِيرٌ
truly, that Day will be a difficult day
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 9
عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيرٖ
and not easy for the ones who are ungrateful
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 10
ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدٗا
Forsake to Me whom I alone created
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 11
وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالٗا مَّمۡدُودٗا
I assigned to him the spreading out of wealth
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 12
وَبَنِينَ شُهُودٗا
and children as ones who bear witness
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 13
وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدٗا
And I made smooth for him, a making smooth
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 14
ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ
Again, he is desirous that I increase it
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 15
كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدٗا
No indeed; he had been stubborn about Our signs
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 16
سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا
I will constrain him with a hard ascent
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 17
إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
Truly, he deliberated and calculated
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 18
فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ
Then, perdition to him! How he calculated
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 19
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ
Again, perdition to him! How he calculated
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 20
ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
Again, he looked on
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 21
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
and, again, he frowned and scowled
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 22
ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ
Again, he drew back and grew arrogant
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 23
فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ يُؤۡثَرُ
And he said: This is nothing but fabricated old sorcery
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 24
إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ
This is nothing but the saying of a mortal
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 25
سَأُصۡلِيهِ سَقَرَ
I will scorch him in Saqar
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 26
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ
And how will thee recognize what Saqar is
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 27
لَا تُبۡقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ
It forsakes not nor causes anything to remain
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 28
لَوَّاحَةٞ لِّلۡبَشَرِ
scorching the mortal
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 29
عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ
Over it there are nineteen
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 30
وَمَا جَعَلۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٗۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنٗا وَلَا يَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ وَٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ
We assigned none but angels to be wardens of the Fire and We made the amount of them not but as a test for those who were ungrateful. So those who were given the Book are reassured and those who believed, add to their belief. And will not doubt those who were given the Book and the ones who believe. And say to those who in their hearts is a sickness and the ones who are ungrateful: What had God wanted by this example? Thus, God causes to go astray whom He wills, and He guides whom He wills. And none knows the armies of thy Lord but He. And it is not other than a reminder for the mortals
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 31
كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ
No indeed! By the moon
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 32
وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ
and the night when it drew back
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 33
وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَآ أَسۡفَرَ
and polished is the morning
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 34
إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ
Truly, it is one of the greatest of all things
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 35
نَذِيرٗا لِّلۡبَشَرِ
as a warner to the mortals
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 36
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ يَتَأَخَّرَ
to whomever willed among you that he go forward or remain behind
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 37
كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِينَةٌ
Every soul is a pledge for what it earned
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 38
إِلَّآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
but the Companions of the Right
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 39
فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
will be in Gardens and will demand of one another
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 40
عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ
about the ones who sin
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 41
مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِي سَقَرَ
What thrust you into Saqar
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 42
قَالُواْ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
They would say: We be not among the ones who formally pray
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 43
وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينَ
and we were not those who feed the needy
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 44
وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَآئِضِينَ
And we had been ones who engage in idle talk along with the ones who engage in idle talk
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 45
وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
And we had been denying the Day of Judgment
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 46
حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡيَقِينُ
until the certainty of the Hour approached us
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 47
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ
Then, intercession will not profit them from the ones who are intercessors
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 48
فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِينَ
Then, what is the matter with them that they are ones who turn aside from the admonition
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 49
كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرٞ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةٞ
as though they had been frightened donkeys
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 50
فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ
that ran away from a lion
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 51
بَلۡ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفٗا مُّنَشَّرَةٗ
Nay! Every man among them wants to be given unrolled scrolls
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 52
كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ
No indeed! Nay! They fear not the world to come
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 53
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةٞ
No indeed! Truly, it is an admonition
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 54
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
So let whoever willed, remember it
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 55
وَمَا يَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ
But they will not remember unless God wills. He is Worthy of God-consciousness and He is Worthy of granting The Forgiveness
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 56
