Surah Al-Muddathir - English Translation by Mufti Taqi Usmani
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ
O you, enveloped in a mantle
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 1
قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ
stand up and warn
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 2
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ
and pronounce the greatness of your Lord
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 3
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ
and purify your clothes
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 4
وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ
and keep away from filth
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 5
وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ
and do not do a favour (to anyone merely) to seek more (in return)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 6
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ
And for the sake of your Lord, observe patience
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 7
فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي ٱلنَّاقُورِ
For when the trumpet will be blown
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 8
فَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَوۡمٌ عَسِيرٌ
that day will be a difficult day
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 9
عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيرٖ
not easy for the disbelievers
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 10
ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدٗا
Leave me alone (to deal) with the one whom I created lonely
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 11
وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالٗا مَّمۡدُودٗا
and gave him extensive wealth
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 12
وَبَنِينَ شُهُودٗا
and sons present before (his) eyes
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 13
وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدٗا
and extended (power and honour) to him pretty well
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 14
ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ
Still, he aspires that I should give him more
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 15
كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدٗا
Never! He is inimical towards Our verses
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 16
سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا
I will force him to climb the mountain Sa‘ūd
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 17
إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
He pondered and surmised
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 18
فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ
Death onto him! How (bad) is the surmise he put forward
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 19
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ
Again, death unto him! How (bad) is the surmise he put forward
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 20
ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
Then he looked (to those around him)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 21
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
then he frowned and scowled
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 22
ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ
then turned his back, and waxed proud
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 23
فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ يُؤۡثَرُ
then said, “This is nothing but traditional magic
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 24
إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ
this is nothing but saying of a mortal.”
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 25
سَأُصۡلِيهِ سَقَرَ
I will put him into Saqar (Hell)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 26
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ
And what can let you know what Saqar is
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 27
لَا تُبۡقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ
It neither spares (anything inside it from burning) nor leaves (any disbeliever outside)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 28
لَوَّاحَةٞ لِّلۡبَشَرِ
It will disfigure the skins
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 29
عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ
Appointed on it are nineteen (wardens)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 30
وَمَا جَعَلۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٗۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنٗا وَلَا يَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ وَٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ
And We did not make wardens of the Fire but (from) angels, and did not fix their number but as a test for those who disbelieve, so that those who are given the Book may come to believe, and those who believe may improve in belief, and so that those who are given the Book and those who believe may not doubt (its correctness), and so that those having malady in their hearts and the disbelievers say, “What has Allah meant by this strange statement?” Thus Allah lets go astray whomever He wills, and leads to the right path whomever He wills. And no one knows the hosts of your Lord but He. And this is nothing else but a reminder for mankind
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 31
كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ
Truly, I swear by the moon
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 32
وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ
and by the night when it goes back
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 33
وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَآ أَسۡفَرَ
and by the morning when it becomes bright
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 34
إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ
it (Saqar : Hell) is one of the greatest things
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 35
نَذِيرٗا لِّلۡبَشَرِ
as a warning to the mankind
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 36
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ يَتَأَخَّرَ
to the one from among you who wishes to come forward (towards good deeds) or to go back (from them)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 37
كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِينَةٌ
Everyone will be detained (in the Hell) because of what he did
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 38
إِلَّآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
except the People of the Right, (i.e. those who will be given their Book of Deeds in their right hands)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 39
فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
who will be in gardens, asking
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 40
عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ
about the guilty persons
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 41
مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِي سَقَرَ
“What has brought you to Saqar? (Hell)”
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 42
قَالُواْ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
They will say, “We were not among those who offered Salāh , (obligatory prayer)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 43
وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينَ
and we did not give food to the needy
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 44
وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَآئِضِينَ
and we indulged (in mocking at the truth) along with those who indulged
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 45
وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
and we used to deny the Day of Requital
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 46
حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡيَقِينُ
until when we were overtaken by that which is certain.”
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 47
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ
Then intercession of intercessors will not benefit them
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 48
فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِينَ
So what has happened to them that they are turning away from the Reminder
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 49
كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرٞ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةٞ
as if they were wild donkeys
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 50
فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ
fleeing from a lion
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 51
بَلۡ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفٗا مُّنَشَّرَةٗ
Rather, every one of them wishes that he should be given unrolled (divine) scriptures
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 52
كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ
Never! But they do not fear the Hereafter
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 53
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةٞ
Never! Indeed, this is a Reminder
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 54
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
So, whoever so wishes may take advice from it
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 55
وَمَا يَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ
And they will not take advice unless Allah so wills. He is worthy to be feared, and worthy to forgive
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 56
