Surah Al-Muddathir - English Translation by Abdul Hye
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ
O you (Muhammad) enveloped (in garments)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 1
قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ
Arise and warn
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 2
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ
Proclaim (the greatness of) your Lord (Allah)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 3
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ
and purify your garments
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 4
وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ
and keep away from filth (idols)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 5
وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ
and don’t give a thing to have more (obey Allah not as a Favor to Him)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 6
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ
and be patient for the sake of your Lord
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 7
فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي ٱلنَّاقُورِ
When the trumpet will be sounded
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 8
فَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَوۡمٌ عَسِيرٌ
surely, that Day will be a hard Day
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 9
عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيرٖ
not easy for the disbelievers
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 10
ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدٗا
Leave Me alone to deal with whom I created alone (without any means, including Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah, a bitter opponent of the prophet)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 11
وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالٗا مَّمۡدُودٗا
and Allah granted him abundant resources
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 12
وَبَنِينَ شُهُودٗا
and children by his side
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 13
وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدٗا
and made life smooth and comfortable for him
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 14
ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ
Yet, he desires that I should give more
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 15
كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدٗا
Nay! Surely, he has been stubborn and opposing to Our revelations
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 16
سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا
I shall soon oblige him to face (climb a slippery mountain in the hellfire) a severe punishment
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 17
إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
surely, he thought and plotted
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 18
فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ
So let him be cursed, how he plotted
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 19
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ
And (again) let him be cursed, how he plotted
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 20
ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
Then he thought
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 21
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
then frowned and looked in a bad tempered way
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 22
ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ
then he turned his back and was proud
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 23
فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ يُؤۡثَرُ
and he said: “This is nothing but a magic from the old
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 24
إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ
this is nothing but the word of a human being.”
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 25
سَأُصۡلِيهِ سَقَرَ
I will burn him in hellfire
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 26
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ
And what will make you know exactly what hellfire is
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 27
لَا تُبۡقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ
It does not spare (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything not burnt)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 28
لَوَّاحَةٞ لِّلۡبَشَرِ
Fire burns the skins
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 29
عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ
Over it are 19 (angels as guardians and keepers of hell)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 30
وَمَا جَعَلۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٗۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنٗا وَلَا يَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ وَٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ
And We have set none but angels as guardians of the fire. We have not fixed their numbers (19) except as a trial for those who disbelieve in order that those who were given the Scripture may be convinced (Qur’an is the truth as it agrees with their books i.e. number (19) is written in the Torah and the Gospel). Those who believe may increase in faith (in Qur’an). Those who were given the Scripture and believers may say to those in whose hearts there is a disease (hypocrisy) and the disbelievers say: “What Allah means by this example?” Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. No one knows the forces of your Lord but He. This (Qur’an) is nothing but a reminder to mankind
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 31
كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ
Nay, by the moon
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 32
وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ
and by the night when it withdraws
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 33
وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَآ أَسۡفَرَ
and by the dawn when it brightens
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 34
إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ
surely, it (hell) is one of the greatest signs
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 35
نَذِيرٗا لِّلۡبَشَرِ
and a warning to mankind
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 36
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ يَتَأَخَّرَ
to any of you that chooses to go forward (by righteous deeds), or remain behind (by sins)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 37
كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِينَةٌ
Every person is held in a pledge for what he has earned
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 38
إِلَّآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
except those on the right (true believers)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 39
فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
in gardens (Paradise) they will ask one another
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 40
عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ
about the criminals. (They will say to them)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 41
مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِي سَقَرَ
“What has caused you to enter into hell?”
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 42
قَالُواْ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
They will say: “We were not of those who used to offer prayers
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 43
وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينَ
nor we used to feed the poor
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 44
وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَآئِضِينَ
we used to talk falsehood with vain talkers
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 45
وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
and we used to deny the Day of recompense
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 46
حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡيَقِينُ
until there came to us the certainty (death).”
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 47
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ
(On that Day) no intercession of intercessors will be of any use to them
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 48
فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِينَ
Then what is wrong with them (disbelievers) that they turn away from receiving the admonition
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 49
كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرٞ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةٞ
As if they were frightened donkeys
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 50
فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ
fleeing from a hunter, or a lion, or a beast of prey
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 51
بَلۡ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفٗا مُّنَشَّرَةٗ
Nay, everyone of them desires that he should be given pages spread out (writing from Allah that Islam is the right religion)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 52
كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ
Nay! But they don’t fear the Hereafter (Allah’s punishment)
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 53
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةٞ
Nay, surely, this (Qur’an) is an admonition
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 54
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
So whoever wills (let him read it), will reflect on it
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 55
وَمَا يَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ
And they will not take heed unless Allah wills. He is the One deserves that mankind should be afraid of Him. He is the One Who forgives
Surah Al-Muddathir, Verse 56
