Surah An-Naziat - English Translation by Aisha Bewley
وَٱلنَّـٰزِعَٰتِ غَرۡقٗا
By those who pluck out harshly
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 1
وَٱلنَّـٰشِطَٰتِ نَشۡطٗا
and those who draw out gently
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 2
وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَٰتِ سَبۡحٗا
and those who glide serenely
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 3
فَٱلسَّـٰبِقَٰتِ سَبۡقٗا
and those who outrun easily
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 4
فَٱلۡمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمۡرٗا
and those who direct affairs
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 5
يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ
On the Day the first blast shudders
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 6
تَتۡبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ
and the second blast follows it
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 7
قُلُوبٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ وَاجِفَةٌ
hearts that Day will be pounding
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 8
أَبۡصَٰرُهَا خَٰشِعَةٞ
and eyes will be cast down
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 9
يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرۡدُودُونَ فِي ٱلۡحَافِرَةِ
They will say, ´Are we to be restored to how we were
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 10
أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَٰمٗا نَّخِرَةٗ
when we have become perished, worm-eaten bones?´
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 11
قَالُواْ تِلۡكَ إِذٗا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٞ
They say, ´That will clearly be a losing restoration!´
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 12
فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجۡرَةٞ وَٰحِدَةٞ
There will be but one Great Blast
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 13
فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ
and at once they will be on the surface, wide awake
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 14
هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ
Has the story of Musa reached you
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 15
إِذۡ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلۡوَادِ ٱلۡمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى
when his Lord called out to him in the holy valley of Tuwa
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 16
ٱذۡهَبۡ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ
´Go to Pharaoh — he has overstepped the limits —
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 17
فَقُلۡ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ
and say: "Do you resolve to purify yourself
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 18
وَأَهۡدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخۡشَىٰ
I will guide you to your Lord so that you may fear Him?"´
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 19
فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلۡأٓيَةَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ
Then he showed him the Great Sign
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 20
فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ
But he denied it and disobeyed
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 21
ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ يَسۡعَىٰ
and then he hastily backed away
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 22
فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ
But then he rallied and called out
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 23
فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ
saying, ´I am your Lord Most High!´
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 24
فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰٓ
So Allah made an example of him seizing him with punishment in the next World and this world
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 25
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبۡرَةٗ لِّمَن يَخۡشَىٰٓ
There is certainly instruction in that for those who fear
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 26
ءَأَنتُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُۚ بَنَىٰهَا
Are you stronger in structure or is heaven? He built it
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 27
رَفَعَ سَمۡكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا
He raised its vault high and made it level
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 28
وَأَغۡطَشَ لَيۡلَهَا وَأَخۡرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا
He darkened its night and brought forth its morning light
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 29
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ
After that He smoothed out the earth
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 30
أَخۡرَجَ مِنۡهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرۡعَىٰهَا
and brought forth from it its water and its pastureland
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 31
وَٱلۡجِبَالَ أَرۡسَىٰهَا
and made the mountains firm
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 32
مَتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
for you and for your livestock to enjoy
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 33
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ
When the Great Calamity comes
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 34
يَوۡمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ
that Day man will remember what he has striven for
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 35
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ
and the Blazing Fire will be displayed for all who can see
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 36
فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ
As for him who overstepped the bounds
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 37
وَءَاثَرَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا
and preferred the life of this world
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 38
فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ
the Blazing Fire will be his refuge
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 39
وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفۡسَ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ
But as for him who feared the Station of his Lord and forbade the lower self its appetites
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 40
فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ
the Garden will be his refuge
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 41
يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرۡسَىٰهَا
They ask you about the Hour: ´When will it come?´
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 42
فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكۡرَىٰهَآ
What are you doing mentioning it
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 43
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ
Its coming is your Lord´s affair
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 44
إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخۡشَىٰهَا
You are only the warner of those who fear it
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 45
كَأَنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَ يَرَوۡنَهَا لَمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوۡ ضُحَىٰهَا
On the Day they see it, it will be as if they had only lingered for the evening or the morning of a single day
Surah An-Naziat, Verse 46
