Surah Abasa - English Translation by Abdel Haleem
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
                  He frowned and turned away                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 1
                
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ
                  when the blind man came to him––                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 2
                
وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
                  for all you know, he might have grown in spirit                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 3
                
أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ
                  or taken note of something useful to him                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 4
                
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ
                  For the self-satisfied one                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 5
                
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
                  you go out of your way––                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 6
                
وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
                  though you are not to be blamed for his lack of spiritual growth––                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 7
                
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ
                  but from the one who has come to you full of eagerness                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 8
                
وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ
                  and awe                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 9
                
فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
                  you allow yourself to be distracted                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 10
                
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ
                  No indeed! This [Quran] is a lesson                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 11
                
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
                  from which those who wish to be taught should learn                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 12
                
فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ
                  [written] on honoured                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 13
                
مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ
                  exalted, pure pages                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 14
                
بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ
                  by the hands of                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 15
                
كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ
                  noble and virtuous scribes                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 16
                
قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ
                  Woe to man! How ungrateful he is                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 17
                
مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
                  From what thing does God create him                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 18
                
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
                  He creates him from a droplet, He proportions him                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 19
                
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
                  He makes the way easy for him                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 20
                
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ
                  then He causes him to die and be buried                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 21
                
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
                  When He wills, He will raise him up again                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 22
                
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
                  Yet mandoes not fulfil God’s commands                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 23
                
فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
                  Let man consider the food he eats                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 24
                
أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا
                  We pour down abundant water                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 25
                
ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا
                  and cause the soil to split open                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 26
                
فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا
                  We make grain grow                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 27
                
وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا
                  and vines, fresh vegetation                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 28
                
وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا
                  olive trees, date palms                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 29
                
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا
                  luscious gardens                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 30
                
وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا
                  fruits, and fodder                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 31
                
مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
                  all for you and your livestock to enjoy                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 32
                
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
                  When the Deafening Blast comes––                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 33
                
يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ
                  the Day man will flee from his own brother                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 34
                
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
                  his mother, his father                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 35
                
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
                  his wife, his children                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 36
                
لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ
                  each of them will be absorbed in concerns of their own on that Day                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 37
                
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ
                  on that Day some faces will be beaming                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 38
                
ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ
                  laughing, and rejoicing                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 39
                
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ
                  but some faces will be dust-stained                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 40
                
تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
                  and covered in darkness                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 41
                
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ
                  those are the disbelievers, the licentious                  
                  Surah Abasa, Verse 42
