Surah Abasa - English Translation by George Sale
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
The prophet frowned, and turned aside
Surah Abasa, Verse 1
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ
because the blind man came unto him
Surah Abasa, Verse 2
وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
And how dost thou know whether he shall peradventure be cleansed from his sins
Surah Abasa, Verse 3
أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ
or whether he shall be admonished, and the admonition shall profit him
Surah Abasa, Verse 4
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ
The man who is wealthy
Surah Abasa, Verse 5
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
thou receivest respectfully
Surah Abasa, Verse 6
وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
whereas it is not to be charged on thee, that he is not cleansed
Surah Abasa, Verse 7
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ
But him who cometh unto thee earnestly seeking his salvation
Surah Abasa, Verse 8
وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ
and who feareth God
Surah Abasa, Verse 9
فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
dost thou neglect
Surah Abasa, Verse 10
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ
By no means shouldest thou act thus
Surah Abasa, Verse 11
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
Verily the Koran is an admonition; -- and he who is willing retaineth the same
Surah Abasa, Verse 12
فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ
written in volumes honourable
Surah Abasa, Verse 13
مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ
exalted, and pure
Surah Abasa, Verse 14
بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ
by the hands of scribes honoured
Surah Abasa, Verse 15
كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ
and just
Surah Abasa, Verse 16
قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ
May man be cursed! What hath seduced him to infidelity
Surah Abasa, Verse 17
مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
Of what thing doth God create him
Surah Abasa, Verse 18
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
Of a drop of seed doth He create him; and He formeth him with proportion
Surah Abasa, Verse 19
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
and then facilitateth his passage out of the womb
Surah Abasa, Verse 20
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ
Afterwards He causeth him to die, and layeth him in the grave
Surah Abasa, Verse 21
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
hereafter, when it shall please Him, He shall raise him to life
Surah Abasa, Verse 22
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
Assuredly. He hath not hitherto fully performed what God hath commanded him
Surah Abasa, Verse 23
فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
Let man consider his food; in what manner it is provided
Surah Abasa, Verse 24
أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا
We pour down water by showers
Surah Abasa, Verse 25
ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا
afterwards We cleave the earth in clefts
Surah Abasa, Verse 26
فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا
and We cause corn to spring forth therein
Surah Abasa, Verse 27
وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا
and grapes, and clover
Surah Abasa, Verse 28
وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا
and the olive, and the palm
Surah Abasa, Verse 29
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا
and gardens planted thick with trees
Surah Abasa, Verse 30
وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا
and fruits, and grass
Surah Abasa, Verse 31
مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
for the use of yourselves and of your cattle
Surah Abasa, Verse 32
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
When the stunning sound of the trumpet shall be heard
Surah Abasa, Verse 33
يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ
on that day shall a man fly from his brother
Surah Abasa, Verse 34
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
and his mother, and his father
Surah Abasa, Verse 35
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
and his wife, and his children
Surah Abasa, Verse 36
لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ
Every man of them, on that day, shall have business of his own sufficient to employ his thoughts
Surah Abasa, Verse 37
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ
On that day the faces of some shall be bright
Surah Abasa, Verse 38
ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ
laughing, and joyful
Surah Abasa, Verse 39
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ
And upon the faces of others, on that day, shall there be dust
Surah Abasa, Verse 40
تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
darkness shall cover them
Surah Abasa, Verse 41
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ
These are the unbelievers, the wicked
Surah Abasa, Verse 42
