Surah Abasa - English Translation by Edward Henry Palmer
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
He frowned and turned his back
Surah Abasa, Verse 1
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ
for that there came to him a blind man
Surah Abasa, Verse 2
وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
But what should make thee know whether haply he may be purified
Surah Abasa, Verse 3
أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ
or may be mindful and the reminder profit him
Surah Abasa, Verse 4
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ
But as for him who is wealthy
Surah Abasa, Verse 5
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
thou dost attend to him
Surah Abasa, Verse 6
وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
and thou dost not care that he is not purified
Surah Abasa, Verse 7
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ
but as for him who comes to thee earnestly
Surah Abasa, Verse 8
وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ
fearing the while
Surah Abasa, Verse 9
فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
from him thou art diverted
Surah Abasa, Verse 10
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ
Nay! verily, it is a memorial
Surah Abasa, Verse 11
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
and whoso pleases will remember it
Surah Abasa, Verse 12
فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ
In honoured pages
Surah Abasa, Verse 13
مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ
exalted, purified
Surah Abasa, Verse 14
بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ
in the hands of
Surah Abasa, Verse 15
كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ
noble, righteous scribes
Surah Abasa, Verse 16
قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ
May man be killed! how ungrateful he is
Surah Abasa, Verse 17
مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
Of what did He create him
Surah Abasa, Verse 18
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
Of a clot. He created him and fated him
Surah Abasa, Verse 19
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
then the path He did make easy for him
Surah Abasa, Verse 20
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ
then He killed him, and laid him in the tomb
Surah Abasa, Verse 21
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
then when He pleases will He raise him up again
Surah Abasa, Verse 22
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
Nay, he has not fulfilled his bidding
Surah Abasa, Verse 23
فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
But let man look unto his foods
Surah Abasa, Verse 24
أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا
Verily, we have poured the water out in torrents
Surah Abasa, Verse 25
ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا
then we have cleft the earth asunder
Surah Abasa, Verse 26
فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا
and made to grow therefrom the grain
Surah Abasa, Verse 27
وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا
and the grape, and the hay
Surah Abasa, Verse 28
وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا
and the olive, and the palm
Surah Abasa, Verse 29
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا
and gardens closely planted
Surah Abasa, Verse 30
وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا
and fruits, and grass
Surah Abasa, Verse 31
مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
a provision for you and for your cattle
Surah Abasa, Verse 32
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
But when the stunning noise shall come
Surah Abasa, Verse 33
يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ
on the day when man shall flee from his brother
Surah Abasa, Verse 34
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
and his mother and his father
Surah Abasa, Verse 35
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
and his spouse and his sons
Surah Abasa, Verse 36
لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ
Every man among them on that day shall have a business to employ him
Surah Abasa, Verse 37
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ
Faces on that day shall be bright
Surah Abasa, Verse 38
ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ
laughing, joyous
Surah Abasa, Verse 39
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ
and faces shall have dust upon them
Surah Abasa, Verse 40
تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
darkness shall cover them
Surah Abasa, Verse 41
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ
those are the wicked misbelievers
Surah Abasa, Verse 42
