عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
HE¹ FROWNED and turned his back
Surah Abasa, Verse 1
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ
when the blind man came towards him
Surah Abasa, Verse 2
وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
How could you¹ tell? He might have sought to purify himself
Surah Abasa, Verse 3
أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ
He might have remembered, and remembrance might have done him good
Surah Abasa, Verse 4
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ
But to the wealthy man
Surah Abasa, Verse 5
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
you were all attention
Surah Abasa, Verse 6
وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
although the fault would not be yours if he remained uncleansed
Surah Abasa, Verse 7
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ
Yet to him that came to you with zeal
Surah Abasa, Verse 8
وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ
and awe
Surah Abasa, Verse 9
فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
you paid no heed
Surah Abasa, Verse 10
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ
No! This is an Admonition
Surah Abasa, Verse 11
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
let him who will, bear it in mind
Surah Abasa, Verse 12
فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ
It is set down on honoured pages
Surah Abasa, Verse 13
مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ
exalted and purified
Surah Abasa, Verse 14
بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ
by the hands of devout and gracious scribes
Surah Abasa, Verse 15
كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ
Noble and dutiful
Surah Abasa, Verse 16
قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ
Let man perish! How ungrateful he is
Surah Abasa, Verse 17
مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
From what did He create him
Surah Abasa, Verse 18
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
From a little germ He created him and gave him due proportion
Surah Abasa, Verse 19
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
He made his path smooth for him
Surah Abasa, Verse 20
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ
then caused him to die and stowed him in a grave
Surah Abasa, Verse 21
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
He will surely bring him back to life when He pleases
Surah Abasa, Verse 22
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
Yet he declines to do His bidding
Surah Abasa, Verse 23
فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
Let man reflect on the food he eats
Surah Abasa, Verse 24
أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا
how We pour down the rain in torrents
Surah Abasa, Verse 25
ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا
and cleave the earth asunder
Surah Abasa, Verse 26
فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا
how We bring forth the corn
Surah Abasa, Verse 27
وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا
the grapes and the fresh vegetation
Surah Abasa, Verse 28
وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا
the olive and the palm
Surah Abasa, Verse 29
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا
the thickets
Surah Abasa, Verse 30
وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا
the fruit-trees and the green pasture
Surah Abasa, Verse 31
مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
for you and for your cattle to delight in
Surah Abasa, Verse 32
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
But when the dread blast is sounded
Surah Abasa, Verse 33
يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ
on that day each man will forsake his brother
Surah Abasa, Verse 34
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
his mother and his father
Surah Abasa, Verse 35
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
his consort and his children
Surah Abasa, Verse 36
لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ
for each one of them will on that day have enough sorrow of his own
Surah Abasa, Verse 37
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ
On that day there shall be beaming faces
Surah Abasa, Verse 38
ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ
laughing and joyful
Surah Abasa, Verse 39
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ
On that day there shall be faces covered with dust
Surah Abasa, Verse 40
تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
veiled with darkness
Surah Abasa, Verse 41
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ
These shall be the faces of the degenerate blasphemers
Surah Abasa, Verse 42
