Surah Abasa - English Translation by Muhammad Sarwar
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
He frowned and then turned away
Surah Abasa, Verse 1
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ
from a blind man who had come up to him
Surah Abasa, Verse 2
وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself
Surah Abasa, Verse 3
أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ
or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him
Surah Abasa, Verse 4
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ
Yet you pay attention
Surah Abasa, Verse 5
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
to a rich man
Surah Abasa, Verse 6
وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself
Surah Abasa, Verse 7
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ
As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance)
Surah Abasa, Verse 8
وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ
and who has fear of God
Surah Abasa, Verse 9
فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
you ignore him
Surah Abasa, Verse 10
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ
These verses are a reminder
Surah Abasa, Verse 11
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
so let those who want to follow its guidance do so
Surah Abasa, Verse 12
فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ
(This Quran) is also recorded in honorable books
Surah Abasa, Verse 13
مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ
exalted, purified
Surah Abasa, Verse 14
بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ
by the hands of the noble, virtuous
Surah Abasa, Verse 15
كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ
and angelic scribes
Surah Abasa, Verse 16
قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ
May (the disbelieving) human being be condemned! What makes him disbelieve
Surah Abasa, Verse 17
مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
From what has God created him
Surah Abasa, Verse 18
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate
Surah Abasa, Verse 19
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow
Surah Abasa, Verse 20
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ
Then He caused him to die and be buried
Surah Abasa, Verse 21
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
and He will resurrect him whenever He wants
Surah Abasa, Verse 22
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands
Surah Abasa, Verse 23
فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food
Surah Abasa, Verse 24
أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا
We send down abundant water
Surah Abasa, Verse 25
ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا
and let the earth to break open
Surah Abasa, Verse 26
فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا
to yield therein corn
Surah Abasa, Verse 27
وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا
grapes, vegetables
Surah Abasa, Verse 28
وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا
olives, dates
Surah Abasa, Verse 29
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا
thickly planted gardens
Surah Abasa, Verse 30
وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا
fruits, and grass
Surah Abasa, Verse 31
مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
(These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle
Surah Abasa, Verse 32
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
When the trumpet sounds
Surah Abasa, Verse 33
يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ
it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother
Surah Abasa, Verse 34
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
mother, father
Surah Abasa, Verse 35
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
wife and sons
Surah Abasa, Verse 36
لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ
for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns
Surah Abasa, Verse 37
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ
Some faces on that day will be radiant
Surah Abasa, Verse 38
ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ
laughing and joyous
Surah Abasa, Verse 39
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ
but others will be gloomy
Surah Abasa, Verse 40
تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
and covered by darkness
Surah Abasa, Verse 41
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ
These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers
Surah Abasa, Verse 42
