Surah Abasa - English Translation by Abdul Hye
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
He (the prophet) frowned and turned away
Surah Abasa, Verse 1
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ
when there came to him the blind man (Abdullah bin Umme Maktoom, who came to the prophet while the prophet was preaching to the chiefs of Makkah)
Surah Abasa, Verse 2
وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
And how can you know? He might become pure (from sins)
Surah Abasa, Verse 3
أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ
or he might receive admonition, and the admonition might profit him
Surah Abasa, Verse 4
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ
As for those who think themselves indifferent
Surah Abasa, Verse 5
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
to whom you were attending
Surah Abasa, Verse 6
وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
you will not be held responsible, if they would not purify themselves (your duty is to convey the message of Allah)
Surah Abasa, Verse 7
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ
Yet, to him who came to you running (with enthusiasm)
Surah Abasa, Verse 8
وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ
and with fear (of Allah)
Surah Abasa, Verse 9
فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
you were unmindful from him
Surah Abasa, Verse 10
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ
Nay, (you should not do so), indeed this is an admonition
Surah Abasa, Verse 11
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
so those who want, let them pay attention to it
Surah Abasa, Verse 12
فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ
It is written in honored records
Surah Abasa, Verse 13
مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ
exalted (in dignity), purified
Surah Abasa, Verse 14
بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ
in the hands of scribes (angels)
Surah Abasa, Verse 15
كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ
(who are) honorable and obedient
Surah Abasa, Verse 16
قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ
Be cursed (disbelieving) people! How ungrateful they are
Surah Abasa, Verse 17
مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
Out of what He has created them
Surah Abasa, Verse 18
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
From semen drop He has created them and then set them in due proportion
Surah Abasa, Verse 19
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
then makes their way (of life) easy for them
Surah Abasa, Verse 20
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ
then causes them to die and puts them in their graves
Surah Abasa, Verse 21
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
Then, He will surely resurrect them again when He wills
Surah Abasa, Verse 22
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
Nay, but they (disbelievers) have not fulfilled what He has commanded them
Surah Abasa, Verse 23
فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
Then let people look at their food
Surah Abasa, Verse 24
أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا
We pour out water (rain) in abundance
Surah Abasa, Verse 25
ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا
then split the earth (soil) in clefts
Surah Abasa, Verse 26
فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا
And We cause to grow in it the grain
Surah Abasa, Verse 27
وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا
and grapes and clover plants
Surah Abasa, Verse 28
وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا
and olives and date-palms
Surah Abasa, Verse 29
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا
and gardens, dense with many trees
Surah Abasa, Verse 30
وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا
and fruits and fodder
Surah Abasa, Verse 31
مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
as a provision and benefit for you and your cattle
Surah Abasa, Verse 32
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
Then when there will come the deafening shout
Surah Abasa, Verse 33
يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ
on that Day a person will flee from his brother
Surah Abasa, Verse 34
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
and his mother and his father
Surah Abasa, Verse 35
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
and his spouse and its children
Surah Abasa, Verse 36
لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ
On that Day, every person will have enough concern to become careless of others
Surah Abasa, Verse 37
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ
Some faces on that Day will be bright (for true believers)
Surah Abasa, Verse 38
ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ
laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise)
Surah Abasa, Verse 39
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ
And other faces on that Day will be dusty
Surah Abasa, Verse 40
تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
darkness will cover them
Surah Abasa, Verse 41
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ
Such will be the (faces of the) disbelieving wicked
Surah Abasa, Verse 42
