Surah Abasa - English Translation by Dr Laleh Bakhtiar
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
He frowned and turned away
Surah Abasa, Verse 1
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ
that the blind man drew near him
Surah Abasa, Verse 2
وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
And what will cause thee to recognize so that perhaps he will purify himself
Surah Abasa, Verse 3
أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ
or yet recollect and a reminder profit him
Surah Abasa, Verse 4
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ
But as for he who was self-complacent
Surah Abasa, Verse 5
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
then, thou hast attended to him
Surah Abasa, Verse 6
وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
and not upon thee is any blame if he purifies not himself
Surah Abasa, Verse 7
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ
Yet as for him who drew near to thee, coming eagerly for knowledge
Surah Abasa, Verse 8
وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ
and he dreads God
Surah Abasa, Verse 9
فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
then, thou hast paid no heed to him
Surah Abasa, Verse 10
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةٞ
No indeed! Truly, this is an admonition
Surah Abasa, Verse 11
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
So let whoever willed, remember it
Surah Abasa, Verse 12
فِي صُحُفٖ مُّكَرَّمَةٖ
in scrolls to be held in esteem
Surah Abasa, Verse 13
مَّرۡفُوعَةٖ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ
ones that are exalted and ones that are purified
Surah Abasa, Verse 14
بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةٖ
by the hands of generous writers
Surah Abasa, Verse 15
كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةٖ
and ones who are kindly, generous
Surah Abasa, Verse 16
قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ
Perdition to the human being! How ungrateful he is
Surah Abasa, Verse 17
مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
From which thing did He create him
Surah Abasa, Verse 18
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
He created him from seminal fluid then, ordained that he be
Surah Abasa, Verse 19
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
He made the way easy for him again
Surah Abasa, Verse 20
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ
Again, He caused him to die and be buried
Surah Abasa, Verse 21
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
Again, when He willed, He will revive him
Surah Abasa, Verse 22
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
No indeed! The human being finishes not what He commanded him
Surah Abasa, Verse 23
فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
Then, let the human being look on his food—
Surah Abasa, Verse 24
أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبّٗا
how We, truly, unloosed rain water with a pouring out
Surah Abasa, Verse 25
ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقّٗا
Again, We split the earth, a splitting
Surah Abasa, Verse 26
فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبّٗا
And We put forth in it grain
Surah Abasa, Verse 27
وَعِنَبٗا وَقَضۡبٗا
and grapevines and reeds
Surah Abasa, Verse 28
وَزَيۡتُونٗا وَنَخۡلٗا
and olives and date palm trees
Surah Abasa, Verse 29
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبٗا
and dense fertile gardens
Surah Abasa, Verse 30
وَفَٰكِهَةٗ وَأَبّٗا
and sweet fruits and whatever grows on the earth
Surah Abasa, Verse 31
مَّتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
an enjoyment for you and your flocks
Surah Abasa, Verse 32
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
Then, when the blare drew near
Surah Abasa, Verse 33
يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ
that Day a man will run away from his brother
Surah Abasa, Verse 34
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
and his mother and his father
Surah Abasa, Verse 35
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
and his companion wife and his children
Surah Abasa, Verse 36
لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ شَأۡنٞ يُغۡنِيهِ
For every man of them on that Day will be a matter that will preoccupy him
Surah Abasa, Verse 37
وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ مُّسۡفِرَةٞ
Faces that Day will be ones that are polished
Surah Abasa, Verse 38
ضَاحِكَةٞ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةٞ
ones who are laugh and ones who rejoice at good tidings
Surah Abasa, Verse 39
وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةٞ
And faces on that Day will be dust-stained
Surah Abasa, Verse 40
تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
Gloom will come over them
Surah Abasa, Verse 41
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ
Those, they are the ones who are ungrateful, ones who act immorally
Surah Abasa, Verse 42
